Student RP - Medical Insurance

Post by coolme » Fri Jul 18, 2008 7:38 pm

I'm from Sri Lanka. It's required that I submit proof of health insurance along with the application. When I contacted most of the local insurance providers they said the maximum they do is only SIX months :(..
I discussed this matter with the consulate office in Colombo, then she said to send the application without the insurance and let's wait for an answer from New Delhi.

Has anyone done like that before?

Please share your thoughts and experience with me..I'd be grateful..

take care

the answer will be no. you need to have insurance, its not an option. theres other providers available just mentioned in another thread.

I agree that the answer will be no. Just today students in my daughter's study abroad program to Tampere (coming from the USA) received an email that the insurance offered through the program (which pays $100,000 per incident) will NOT meet the Finnish government's RP student health requirement and they must pay to upgrade to a policy that will meet the specific requirements

I have seen several insurance agencies that will offer health insurance for more than six months. Often you need to look for agencies that specialize in student/study/expatriate policies abroad/insurance rather than just trip insurance for tourists

Students’ Health Insurance

Any student who submits a residence permit application on or after 1.9.2007 must attach details of their comprehensive health insurance cover to their application. Comprehensive insurance cover means insurance which includes the types of treatment and costs that are covered by municipal health care services and the health insurance system.

It is a precondition for obtaining a residence permit that the student has valid health insurance cover with a reliable and solvent company or institution.
For studies of less than two years in duration, a student must have private insurance which primarily covers the costs of medical treatment up to 100,000 euros (cost level in 2007).

Where the duration of the studies is two years or more, a student will usually have a home municipality in Finland and is therefore entitled to municipal health care services. In such cases, it is sufficient for the insurance to primarily cover the cost of medicines (in practice the cover extends to doctor’s fees and costs of treatment and examination), up to 30,000 euros (cost level in 2007).

A student must have insurance cover when applying for a residence permit as without it a residence permit cannot be granted. In principle a residence permit cannot be issued for a period exceeding the period of the insurance cover.

OMG that's bad news..
so what should I do now... but did you notice I mentioned "hen she said to send the application without the insurance and let's wait for an answer from New Delhi"

Should I contact the Embassy right away and inform them and maybe to courier insurance policy separately...(since rest of the application has already being sent)

I don't know how much you want to spend on insurance but my recommendation is to buy one from www.goodhealthamericas.com. They will pay 100% of everything you encounter and come from a very reputable company. If you want a more minimal plan go to www.studentsecure.com and buy the student plan. It will cover enough to get you a residence permit but not much more. The top of the line plan will run $1300-$2000 depending on your age and deductible amount while the student secure plan will run around $600-$1000.

I got my RP with the Goodhealth America plan and the woman at the Police station in Turku told me that it far exceeded their requirements.

Under the Finnish Immigrations Service FAQ's, it states this: (one of them is pretty expensive though, I believe it was the Dutch one when I looked into a while ago.)

8. Where can I acquire the approved health insurance that I need in order to apply for a student residence permit?

You can apply for insurance abroad at an insurance company in your home country or enquire about suitable insurance at international insurance companies. Finnish diplomatic missions and the Finnish police will provide further advice. Up till now, Finnish insurance companies do not grant private insurance equivalent to the Finnish health insurance scheme as separate insurance cover.

International health insurances for students are offered, for instance, by the following companies:

the French Assurances Courtages et Services (ACS)
AON Students Insurance, whose parent company is the US company AON Corporation
(http://www.students-insurance.eu)
the US company International Student Insurance
(http://www.internationalstudentinsurance.com)
the Swiss insurance Swisscare – ESI Finland plan
(http://www.swisscare-student.com)
Each insurance and its terms and conditions are assessed individually when the residence permit application is being considered.

The insurance policy must at least include:

personal data
validity of insurance
geographical area in which the insurance is valid
insurance cover
amounts of benefit
possibility to continue an insurance valid for less than a year.
