No one really cares about basketball at the olympics, but if you were to post pictures of american pole vaulters for instance i'm sure there'd be more interest.

it´s normal that the U.S. basket team destroyed us they are the best and with this we can´t do anything, anyway i hope unless we´ll be able to get any medal.

While we're talking about the Spanish basketball team... I gotta ask, what's with those pictures mocking the Chinese? What's up with that? Are people in Spain racist?

A few years ago (perhaps three of four), England played a friendly international football match in Spain. The crowd repeatedly made monkey sounds aimed at the black English players. Never a good sign. The England lads should've walked off the pitch, but didn't.

It was also reported that the Spanish coach also told one of his players: "Tell that negro de mierda (!"#¤% black) that you are much better than him" in reference to France striker Thierry Henry (who you might have seen in Gillete commercials, alongside Woods, but not recognised him :). I doubt these attitudes are confined to the arena of football and sport.

However, in the latter example, the coach is a senior chap, and somewhat "old-fashioned" perhaps, and he apparently has a good friend, who's black.

Seems to be a problem with sports teams there. Strange. Thought it was a pretty diverse society there. Oh well.

Down there in the peninsula people ask if all the people making a fuss of this are idiots that believe everything their press writes about foreign countries.

The answer to your question is no, they're not racists, but they do have a different sensibility to these kind of issues and can be seen as rather blant.
The basketball team was just caught off gard by a smart photographer. Jon Stewart explains it better than I could:

(please do not share or let any spanish friends/coworks of yours see that video. They are already unsupportable on their own, no need to add fuel to that fire :) )

err, you~re right, I didn't know of the other teams. Or partially right, these guys just lack an education on "cultural sensitivity" and all the "political correctness" that abounds in other latitudes...
Spanish centre Pau Gasol, who plays for the LA Lakers, said: "It was supposed to be funny or something but never offensive in any way. I'm sorry if anybody thought or took it the wrong way and thought that it was offensive."

Point guard Jose Manuel Calderon said: "We felt it was something appropriate, and that it would be interpreted as an affectionate gesture. Without a doubt, some...press didn't see it that way."

Good ol' Ronaldo, i do believe he's being earmarked as the cultural ambassador for Brazil when he retires from the game.
