That's because Spanish food isn't that great either.

If you are willing cross over the border to your neighbour's and send French food, then you have a deal.

If its anything like their American "stuff" that they had a while back I wouldn't count on it being any good.

Well sometimes there is a good surprise. During French week they had butter biscuits and some really good goat's cheese crottin (great for toasting). During American week there were tins of smoked, salted almonds and cashew nuts that were good value for money.

The Economist ran an article on Lidl / Aldi this week. Apparently Lidl has recently opened a store IN Paris (ie the city, rather than the suburbs where they have already lots of shops) and are significantly increasing their market share in Europe (except Norway, where they decided to quit). Interesting article.

They didn't just decide to quit, they weren't making any money so were forced to. Here in Finland they haven't been making money either but have kept trying. I read that some planned stores have been put on hold while they figure out what to do to get business here going better. I admit that once in a while you can get an ok deal from there and admit that I stop in there now and then. But for the most part its pretty low quality stuff and not worth the trouble.

Myyrmäki City Market has a "Spanish Tapas Selection"..there are some small vacuum packs of various things like "Sun Dried Tomatoes" and "Artichoke Hearts" and also some larger packs which give several regional varieties.
e.g Analucian Tapas selection, and Cataluna Tapas Selection, size suitable for a tapas meal for two for about 12 euro.
However, I noticed that both of these selections were dominated by "Garlic" segments.
Also I could not see my favorite Spanish spicey chorizo sausage.

Edit to add the result of a Google search copy paste from a larger article on Lidl UK. (They sell wine unlike Finland so most of the article is about wine)

The Lidl tapas, which are part of the Iberian food promotion currently going on, were very good too - the bacon wrapped figs and bacon wrapped cheese were definitely the most moreish, the Paprika kebabs were the best of that range, but they were all tasty.

In addition we had chorizo (2 varieties, each served both plain and crisped), olives, salted almonds, Deb’s nuts, various cheeses and dips, tortillas, melon, bread and towards the end of the evening little squares of dark chocolate with coffee and tea.

For Finnish people it is more problematic to get their food in Spain than to Spanish in Finland. They only thing is that you should be prepared to pay, on the other side the imported goods are over medium quality (as one acquaintance told to her bf while being in Spain - bring me jamon, but not of this quality, I want the tasty one like in Stockmann).

Maybe there could be some niche for morcila, since Finnish mustamakara has rye instead of rice. As to jamon, fuet, chorizo, manchego, queso burgos, mejillones en escabeche, Atlantic tuna from Calvo, zillion of olives with different stuffing - all is available, depending on the depth of your wallet.

If you like Spanish food and you happen to be in London there is a great restaurant called Brindisa in Borough Market - best chorizo, cheese, wine and tapas I have had anywhere in the world... :) Borough Market generally is great for wandering around and grazing ....

So the original proposition of the thread was to swap some Spanish for Finnish - tell me something about Finnish food ! Its not so common in London.... :(
