Buying a car
So we are in the market for some wheels. We are a family of 4 and do not want to spend over €10,000. New or used does not matter. What should we be looking for here in Finland? The choices and shopping are a bit different over here than the US, obviously, the last place a bought a vehicle.
What are the makes and models we should look for first?
Thanks

10k. that's not much.
Here's my choice..Pre 2003 Toyota Avensis. Motor is the same as current model (I believe), and it's reliable, cheap to fix, ugly as your sister and cheap to run as the family stray cat.

It's more than half the annual income of an average resident in this country.cow-heada wrote:10k. that's not much.
We also set a budget of €10k on my wife's car, but you're right ... €10k here gets you an 8/9 year old Volvo S40. In the UK the same figure will get you a 3 year old S60.
I ended up going to Germany as the choice of cars at around €10k was so poxy.

Re: Buying a car
Toyota good car but overrated here, look for something else Japanish (Honda Jazz small but smart). No new famlily car for 10k or you must be able to sqeez everything in a hyundai Getz.
Re: Buying a car
But....you still have to pay the taxes on an imported car from Germany. The Finnish Government is ignoring EU rules for a free market when it comes to cars.

You have to pay taxes in most countries if you import a car from Germany. It's not a Finnish thing although the tax amount might be
I don~t really know but is a quite plausible that people living in Germany do pay taxes when importing cars.

Re: Buying a car
10K is good enough to buy a decent car ...5-6 year old car ( japanese/german), remember, average age of car here is 10yrs. A station-wagon is better than a 4-door for practical purposes. If you are not exchanging, you should get atleast 10% off the list price.
Re: Buying a car
Look cars from lapland if possible, less rust (not so much salt in roads) and probably driven longer trips.

Re: Buying a car
That is true, but the prices for some used cars in Germany can be half of what you pay in Finland.Petra1701 wrote:But....you still have to pay the taxes on an imported car from Germany. The Finnish Government is ignoring EU rules for a free market when it comes to cars.
Even after flights, hotels, export plates, shipping costs, import taxes and ALV, you can still save money.

But then you play import tax roulette....Today, I think this car is worth.......sinikala wrote:That is true, but the prices for some used cars in Germany can be half of what you pay in Finland.Petra1701 wrote:But....you still have to pay the taxes on an imported car from Germany.
