UAS Ratings
Hi, everyone. Does anyone know any site or resources out there that can help me decide among several University of Applied Sciences that I'm planning on applying to? Are they rated or is there a way to know which one is better? I'll be studying IT and I'm considering the following that have the programmes I'm interested in: Oulu UAS, Turku UAS, Kemi-Tornio UAS, Savonia UAS, Vaasan UAS, Haaga-Helia, Mikkelin and Central Ostrobothnia UAS. I know I can only apply to 4 and the order I choose is binding so any help would be appreciated.
Another question is if there a big difference between the cost of living among these cities? My guess would be that it would be cheaper to live in let's say Oulu than Helsinki or Turku.

it is cheap for a reason - if you imagine working on the side or not

Oulu UAS, Turku UAS, Kemi-Tornio UAS, Savonia UAS, Vaasan UAS, Haaga-Helia, Mikkelin and Central Ostrobothnia UAS.
I would put them in two groups.
The four to apply to.
Haaga-Helia, Oulu UAS, Turku UAS, Vaasan UAS.
Then the rest.

People do not become more irritable as they grow old - they simply stop making the effort to avoid annoying others.
Re: UAS Ratings
I know people who have studied in Kemi-Tornio UAS and they went crazy there. I guess if you were from there and knew people and the area etc you could survive. But all the foreigners that I have known to have gone there (hehe all 3 of them) have hated it. One did actually finish though, 1 transferred, and 1 quit and went home.

Re: UAS Ratings
even some Finnish cry over sea wind there, I have heard!jas_rho wrote:I know people who have studied in Kemi-Tornio UAS and they went crazy there....

comparing educational institution is American culture. No such comparison here in Finland. I have not even come across unofficial version. Talking about UAS, everything is sama while University of Helsinki commands respect in university category.
Haaga Helia is better if you are a city guy. Cost is almost same except conspicuous travel expense!

Re: UAS Ratings
well they have some rankings, but basically its an Orwellian situation that all educational institutions are equal, some institutions just are more equal than the rest...
the UAS are based on the old "opisto" level schools, back in the "good old days" these offered vocational degrees, and university was only masters degree... so the split was between academia and practical institutions. however some of these schools were the top of the line in their field, like Haaga restaurant school, Helsingin Liikemiesten Kauppaopisto business college, ATK-Instituutti computer college, Porvoon Matkailuopisto travel&tourism and Helsingin Sihteeriopisto secretary college all top in their fields (these are now with a few others Haaga-Helia)... a HSO secretary would speak 4 languages at minimum...
so theres some UAS then a few good schools lumped together with some less spectacular schools, but if they've been teaching a discipline since the 1950's they have a tradition of "knowing their sh*t"... and some UAS offer courses that you don't find anywhere else.

Re: UAS Ratings
Is studying in Kemi worse/better than in Raahe? They're really not that far away from each other anyway.jas_rho wrote:I know people who have studied in Kemi-Tornio UAS and they went crazy there. Re: UAS Ratings
I dunno but if its in the same location up there where the Kemi-Tornio school is then I wouldn't wanna be there. I have lived in Kemi several years ago. I have several good friends from there and ONLY that made it bearable. Otherwise I would never want to live there.VirtualSkull wrote:Is studying in Kemi worse/better than in Raahe? Re: UAS Ratings
There's not such a thing as Raahe UAS? It's Oulu UAS's Raahe School of Engineering and Business. Raahe has the longest tradition in IT education in Finland. The School there (which nowadays is part of Oulu UAS) is the first IT school in Finland, started to teach IT in 1974.
if you think of work prospects along studies, maybe you should also consider the sizes of the towns/cities?
Oulu UAS (Oulu 132700, Raahe 22500), Turku UAS (Turku 175000), Kemi-Tornio UAS (Kemi 22500, Tornio 22400), Savonia UAS (Kuopio 91600, Iisalmi 22300), Vaasa UAS (57900), Haaga-Helia (Helsinki 570000, whole area about 1 million), Mikkeli (Mikkeli 48700, Pieksämäki 20400, Savonlinna 26600) and Central Ostrobothnia UAS (Kokkola 37200, Ylivieska 13700, Pietarsaari 19600).

Re: UAS Ratings
If u ask me... I would just say: The bigger the city is , the better it is
So, in this case, put METROPOLIA in first option, HAAGA-HELIA in 2nd ,,, and about the 3rd+4th: leave blank

Re: UAS Ratings
I find this thread very interesting.
I'm a Nigerian student hoping to apply into InfoTech course- Saviona UAS/Turku UAS! The reason I choose to apply into these colleges is because they don't require any entrance examination for foregin students. If not, I would have preferred staying in Helsinki. The requirements from other schools are kinda too much to handle for me right now, especially the entrance examination part where the embassies wouldn't give one a students visa as one hasn't been fully admitted.
I would like to know if there are jobs that one could do during spare time in Finland, I understand one is allowed to work 20hrs a week, though, I don't intent to rely on the part time work for my survival in Finland. I would also like to know about Internet connections in Finland, I'm kinda like an Internet geek, so I'll like to know if fast internet connections are available in the areas of Saviona/Turku. . .
Any serious comments would be appreciated.
