I've never seen instant jelly in any of the supermarkets, but the Asian shop down the escalators in the Hakaniemi Metro station used to stock it. It's a while since I've been there ... they also used to do tinned cream and ghee. Pretty handy actually, I should pay them a visit.

They have a thin potato/corn starch based equivalent called "Kiisseli" which is like a fruit flavoured wallpaper paste. It's nasty.
How long have you been here?

Re: Instand jelly powder and caramel
Been here 2yrs plus....... starting to explore the fun of cooking.

That place in Hakaniemi Metro station also used to sell Bird's custard powder.
I'm definitely going there next time I get to Helsinki.

Behnfords has Rowntree jelly (you add boiling water, then leave it to set) - I got some orange for Halloween and threw in a few skull-shaped candies before it set. Disgusting. They had a couple of other flavours. The Rowntree stuff comes in a small box about the size of a packet of cigarettes. I think some of the Hakaniemi shops also stock it.
BTW, I think the caramel sauce that Sinikala refers to is in the cooler cabinets at the supermarket... probably near the cream etc

EDIT: K-Citymarkets (at least the ones in Espoo) stock American Jello powder. It's not instant, but it's got instructions for setting it in a few hours. Now if I could only find Aeroplane Jelly...
Finland -> Australia -> Finland -> Canada -> Finland -> the UK -> Finland

Was the Rowntree's one the old fashioned block type? I think that's gelatin based. The instant jelly powder in the Asian shops is pectin or carrageenan based (so vegetarian).penelope wrote:Behnfords has Rowntree jelly (you add boiling water, then leave it to set) - I got some orange for Halloween and threw in a few skull-shaped candies before it set. Location of caramel sauce varies... you would expect it to be kept in the same area as the rest of the Valio product lineup of however, it's often kept over by the baking products, along with packets of whip deserts (same idea as Angel Delight)

Re: Instand jelly powder and caramel
Yes block type. Yes, gelatin based. But no artificial flavours. Natural colours. And BTW it was Hartley's, not Rowntree.sinikala wrote:

http://www.hartleysjelly.co.uk As I said, disgusting and very orange

Did you pay her by the hour too?

Political correctness is the belief that it's possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Google and wikipedia are great combo when guessing food stuff
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caramel -> http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sokerikul%C3%B6%C3%B6ri hmm, this doesn't seem to work so well as I thought first...
