Presence during trail

Post by rinso » Thu Nov 20, 2008 4:29 pm

What happens with a person who doesn't show up for a criminal trial where he is the suspect? (serious crime, could lead to jail time)
I know that that in Finland a trail cannot start without the suspect, but I cannot imagine you could avoid punishment by not showing up.

And no, it isn't me or one of my family, but someone who made an (for him important) appointment during the time of the trail. So he obvious has no intention of going there. But I don't want to travel 100 km and waste my time for nothing.

well, actually the court session can start without the suspect, the witnesses can be heard etc. of course it is adjourned.
usually the court imposes a fine and there will be a warrant out and the police will bring the person to the next session. reportedly the food in jail is good.
