Concerts in Turku Cathedral (tuomiokirkko)on December 5th

Post by sf_forever » Thu Nov 27, 2008 10:28 pm

On December 5th there will be two concerts in Turku Cathedral.

Arrhythmics (a choir of women uni students) has its Christmas concert at 19.00. Programmes are sold at the door 5/8€. The program will include church choir music and traditional Christmas songs both in Finnish and English. A great way to start Christmas time and to relax before Independence Day. http://org.utu.fi/tyyala/arrhythmics/

If you like to listen to good music, feel welcome to come. As most of you probably know, attending a concert in a church is always free. In this case also the programs are being sold to support the choirs activity.

After Arrhythmics there will be an Academic Christmas song event where the people attending can join in singing the Christmas songs. The event starts at 22.00.

I didn't know that one could attend a concert in a church for free.

At least Lippupalvelu seems to sell tickets to concerts that are held in churches... does anyone have more information?

No, I dare claim there is no such general rule that concerts in churches are always free.. Last year paid 18 Euro for some Easter concert in Turku's cathedral, and also the advent concerts last year by several different choirs always cost something (not just the programme leaflet).. I think it depends entirely on the performers, whether they charge something or not.

Whoops, my mistake. :) Apparently, if the artist / performer has paid rent for using the church, then they can charge the fee (you have to pay it). But if the turn has been given without charge to the performers, the fee is voluntary. In Arrhythmics' case, I'm not sure.
