Job at the time of Internship
Job at the time of Internship
Hello
I am an Indian. I am coming to Finland for about 60 to 70 days (May -July 2009). I am coming here to do an internship under a professor at University of Turku. Now thing is that he (Prof.) is not going to pay me anything. So I am supposed to arrange everything for the same. can anyone help me regarding :
1. Where to stay so that its cheapest and how many (Euros) will it cost me.
2. how much money (Euros) I need to fulfill my day to day needs like food etc.
3. As I am not from a very rich family, I want to earn while I stay there with these things with me
> I don't know Finnish, I know English and our native Hindi.
> I am not graduated I am in my third year of engineering (Electronics)
> I know many programming languages and I have been teaching Physics here(India) as part time to High School Students.
> I have been never to any other country before
So anybody simply tell me can I find a job here for this much short period?
How much I may get?
and How to apply ?
I know its too early but I just want be on the safe side.

Don't post the same message everywhere. You won't get more or better answers.

Suggest you to read the first topic marked as *** READ THIS FIRST ***
Getting a cheap accommodation, it's best to contact university you're going to, maybe a student housing union could have something that suits for you. Cheap may mean rents starting from 400 EUR per month.
Can you get a job from India? As programming can be done virtually anywhere... What is your selling proposition that any company would hire you if you think getting employed in Finland a) part-time (along with your internship), b) speaking English/Hindi, c) for 2-3 month period, and d) probably with no work permit?

400 Euro, Are you kidding me ?
The Prof. itself said that you may get a dormitory for 100 Euros
also tell me the money required for survival

Re: Job at the time of Internship
Why are you asking in this forum if "Professor itself" has given you advise for 100 euro dorm? Maybe your professor can then give you also hint about the place to contact...? Well, maybe 400 is closer to cheap flat rate, but having a place to stay for approx. 3 euros per night is something I haven't heard
Money for survival... Depends how you define "to survive"? If you live with tuna, rice, macaroni, fresh air, and drink only tap water, maybe you get free meals from the University, you're able to make it just with few euros per day. For commuting/travelling in Finland/Turku you need some funds.

I don't know which kind of dorm your professor was talking about, but I checked the TYS web pages, and the cheapest room in their English web pages was 180€/month. https://www.tys.fi/index.phtml?l=en&s=38&r=16
Re: Job at the time of Internship
In Turku, Read thing called "stickies" to find out how to search for apartments. In Finland, they dont spoon-feed as in like India.vivek wrote:Hello

so check out www.oikotie.fi and put turku in the "Haku" place after you have got to "vuokra asunto" and if you dont understand these, then read the stickies..
Well, Its not India, and assuming that you are a vegan, it could be as cheap as €5-€15 per day.2. how much money (Euros) I need to fulfill my day to day needs like food etc.
considering that Everything is imported ( rice is around €1 per kg), tomatoes are around €3 per kg if it is from Morocco.etc
So allocate around €100 to €200 per month on Food. ( I have even lived on $40 per month a long time ago in the US but times have changed)
You are probably coming on an Internship visa which means that you already have a job!!3. As I am not from a very rich family, I want to earn while I stay there with these things with me

Cant say whether you can work until your Visa status is known ( what you apply for).
But then no one will want to hire a person for 60-70 days for pretty much anything!! when there are lots of other unemployed, Finnish speaking, graduated engineers looking for a job.
NO!!So anybody simply tell me can I find a job here for this much short period?
-€6000 per year is what you have to show in the bank when you come here to Study!! so pretty much that will what be expected of you when you come here as the Visa officers will need proof of financial support..How much I may get?

As you're coming to work in the University of Turku you probably can get an apartment through TYS (=Turun Ylioppilaskyläsäätiö =The Student Village Foundation of Turku)

btw, which programming languages do you know?

Hi Vivek,
tummansinninen has given you a very clear answer to your queries...don't come to Finland thinking that you would be able to finance a part of your stay by getting some part time job which is quite possible had you gone to US,UK,Canada or even Australia but Finland its very difficult...just don't plan anything based on that or else you would be in trouble once you come here with bare minimum...have some extra cash for emergency...
I wonder why you took aninternship which doesn't pay unless the Prof. is world renown and working under him gives you an immense advantage in securing a job in the future...couldn't you find some company which is willing to pay you for an internship...my friend was here last year doing an internship in some company at Turku and he was being paid quite well....i think it was €1600/month before taxes...how do you think this internship would help you in securing a job in future whether in India or in Finland..
maybe you should contact this Prof. and enquire about your chances of getting any part time job and cheap accommodation...

Re: Job at the time of Internship
There are subsidised refectories in the Universities here.tummansininen wrote:As for food, takeaway meals are anywhere from 5 to 10 euros. You could probably eat on 10 euros a day at home. (Yes, everyone else go ahead and argue that it's only 2, or that it's at least 30 a day.)
e.g. http://www.sodexo.fi/dipoli/
Students can and do pile their food pretty high at lunch time at a very low cost (a couple of Euros?).
It's highly subsidised, and for the places that are open for a large part of the day ... e.g. 08:30 - 16:00 there is nothing to stop students eating there twice, e.g. Breakfast and Dinner.
I'd say it's possible to live on €5/day if you are a student. But I wouldn't like to.

Re: Job at the time of Internship
Below a website with ads for flats as well as flatshares, sometimes also renting a room in a shared flat when the actual tenent is away on holiday etc, which is especially the case for the period you indicated.
The list of rooms/flats for rent that are available or being advertised at the moment is http://www.asuntohelppi.fi/ilmoitukset/ ... index.html
You can also post an ad yourself, which you should do via the following link (to post an ad there, click on "LISÄÄ UUSI etsitää vuokra-asuntoa ilmoitus"): http://www.asuntohelppi.fi/ilmoitukset/vuokralle/#post

P.S. : I've posted these two links several times and am getting tired of it, could they maybe be added to some list of housing agencies / search engines that are then stickied for quick reference? Just a suggestion..!
