Re: WIFI from neighbour and low!??
The Supreme Court deemed it illegal a while ago, IIRC. If your neighbor notices you stealing his bandwidth, he might sue you.
Re: WIFI from neighbour and low!??
If they are dumb enough to not put a password on their wlan then go right ahead and use it
But then again, they are going to be able to monitor your usage as well so you have that risk too. I have no doubt that it could be illegal though. But if they are dumb enough to leave it open, they are most likely too dumb to track anything you are doing. I have a neighbor who has one that is open, but I have my own to connect to so haven't had the need to steal from him.

Re: WIFI from neighbour and low!??
Brilliant attitude. If someone is dumb enough to leave the car open with keys inside, go ahead and take the car.jas_rho wrote:If they are dumb enough to not put a password on their wlan then go right ahead and use itBut then again, they are going to be able to monitor your usage as well so you have that risk too. Oh yeah, and some people leave their networks open just to monitor those who steal the connection. Who is the dumb one then?

Re: WIFI from neighbour and low!??
yeah well I didn't say I would be the one using/stealing it. If someone is dumb enough to leave their keys in the car then they deserve to have it stolen. And that doesn't mean I am going to be the one stealing the car. Same thing works here, if they are dumb and leave their wlan open then they shouldn't be surprised if it gets abused. And if someone is stealing another's wlan and the owner sees everything that they have done and where they've been etc., then again, they deserve itaniorek wrote:Brilliant attitude. As mentioned already ... a Finnish court ruled that it is a criminal offence to use somebody else's WiFijas_rho wrote:If they are dumb enough to not put a password on their wlan then go right ahead and use it

Fortunately, in both cases, the law disagrees with your version of what is right and wrong.jas_rho wrote:If someone is dumb enough to leave their keys in the car then they deserve to have it stolen.

I've heard it thousand of times from the gy... ahem pickpockets now imported in Finland. If somebody is foul enough to put his wallet in the rear pocket of his jeans... then he is too dumb and does not deserve to have money.
Luckily we have the law and the people who does not think that way.

Re: WIFI from neighbour and low!??
Wow I am taking a lot of heat for my comments... Not once have I said that it is not illegal and it is not wrong. I am just giving a point that if you leave stuff open, laying around and easy to take, someone is eventually going to steal it.
I would not steal someone's internet connection nor do I need to, I have my own. I would not steal someone's car or someone's wallet either. But that said, and making this simple... in today's world that's just how it is. Would you leave all your money on your front porch just because you can and it would be illegal for anyyone to take? Does a bank just keep its money in some cardboard box in the back room? I mean you guys can come up with all the scenarios in the world and the point is still the same, just because it's illegal to steal, doesn't mean your stuff is safe from getting stolen, try to protect it at least somewhat or suffer the consequences.
PS- As sensitive as you are please don't take that last line as a threat, I am not going to come stealing your crap that you leave out. (or any that you have hidden for that matter
)

a load of sheriff's departments in the USA - at least according to what they show on "americas dumbest criminals" on JIM... I guess they deserve donuts for the gangsta quota...jas_rho wrote:If someone is dumb enough to leave their keys in the car then they deserve to have it stolen.

Hey
That's what I always do when I temporarily do not have an internet connection at home: I use my phone as Bluetooth modem. With Elisa you get 25MB for 4€/month, unlimited for 10€/Month. I have 4MB/Month and it is way enough to check emails, read the news on some newspapers' websites, do internet banking and contribute to some forums like this one. It's also possible to make calls with Skype. And 25MB/Month was enough for my use. Of course, you need to have a bluetooth capable computer + phone and your phone must be able to transfer data. With or without 3G.
Ask your phone provider for the necessary settings (ie. username, password and phone number the phone "calls" to). It was no problem to set it up with a Mac + Nokia 6680, tried it once on a Windows machine and - of course - failed, failed and failed.

Yeah I saw that show. It was funny. I can say it for the ones taking the car too, that if you are dumb enough to steal a car, even with the keys in the ignition, then you deserve the punishmentPursuivant wrote:a load of sheriff's departments in the USA - at least according to what they show on "americas dumbest criminals" on JIM... But back to that show... it was funny that sometimes the car didn't sit for more than 20 min and someone was driving it away. Maybe we could borrow someone's car here and try it in parts of Helsinki?

Re: WIFI from neighbour and low!??
i am sure its against the law to use your neighbour's wlan connection without their permission.
also, using these connection expose your own network to hackers.

I remember that in order to prevent unintended users, some freaks can turn the stuff you read up-side-down

Re: WIFI from neighbour and low!??
Presumably you didn´t try Nokia PC Suite then? Not available for Macs AFAIKdonald wrote:Ask your phone provider for the necessary settings (ie. username, password and phone number the phone "calls" to). I can get online via my N91 connecting to a Lenovo laptop and an Eee PC ... both running XP. Connection can be by bluetooth giving 128 kbps or USB cable which yields 460 kbps, don´t need any user name, password or phone number ... you just tell PC Suite which country and service provider (Elisa for me) I suppose it takes care of all the seetings...and Bob´s your uncle.
Not only can it be used for Skype... but also iPlayer and Slingbox. Being a Crapple fan, these are perhaps new terms to you.

Of course it can be used for anything... But I gave a few examples of what does work despite the lower speed.sinikala wrote:Presumably you didn´t try Nokia PC Suite then? And Nokia PC Suite is not aailable for Mac, that's correct, and so it's even more remarkable that my setup worked on a Mac but not on a Windows machine. IMHO one shouldn't need to install extra software just to use the phone as a bluetooth modem.
