English teacher looking for a job in southern Finland

Post by Mona Carmen » Tue Feb 03, 2009 3:19 pm

Hello. I am an English teacher aged 32, looking for a job in southern Finland: Helsinki , Espoo, Kirkkonnumi, Vantaa areas. I have 15 years of work experience in teaching both general and applied English to age groups varying from 12 to 63.I speak English, French, Hungarian fluently, but unfortunately just a few words in Finnish. It seems very difficult to find a suitable position. I would appreciate your help and advice. Regards, Mona Carmen.

Most language teachers work on a freelance basis for the simple reason that language schools are reluctant to hire full-time teachers onto their staff. I have worked with 4 or 5 different language schools in recent years and also independently. If you are looking for 25-30 opit per week, then you won't find them all in one place!

If you want to work in a school (eg in a comprehensive school or in a lukio), you will have to get your papers translated. There was a job on offer at Vantaa International school a few days ago. It was posted on here, so use the search engine to find the link to the advertisement on MOL. (Edit... the link is now corrupt so I guess the job application date has expired on that one, but it was Vantaa International school in case you want to call them direct)

And, clearly there is a slow-down as many private companies are cost cutting... which includes slicing their external training budgets.

Also, if you are not a native English speaker you will find it difficult.

And maybe you should've posted this thread in the jobs section.
