Environmental Engineering entrance exams

Post by Noige » Fri Feb 13, 2009 11:53 pm

Hei there
I applied for the Environmental Engineering Degree Programmes at TAMK UAS and Metropolia UAS. So I would like to know if there is anyone here who has passed the exam at one of the two UAS who could give me some pieces of advice for the entrance exams?
Would be lovely.
Thank you :D

ummm, my ex got in for the auto engineering program, I think he had to study a lot of physics, chemistry, and math (I'm guessing calculus level or at least college level algebra) to pass the exam. Engineering is the highest paying degree in my country not sure about Finland. So, you should expect heavy math to be involved. Good luck, that degree sounds very interesting.

Heavy math? I've heard something totally opposite  Short maths, rather easy...logic, % and x,y exercises.

then you are probably right ...algebra x & y equations for the exam, not sure if they go higher than that on the exam. I know in my country, engineerings have to study heavy math - up to calculus 2 or 3 to graduate from a university.

What you need in the entrance exam and in the studies afterwards are two very different things. Knowing high school maths is enough for entrance exams.

Hello. :ochesey:

I'm probably not the most appropriate person to reply but I wanted to help you somehow. :lightbulb:

As far as I know, in the entrance examination, there should be some basic maths that you should know from high school, some physics and chemistry exercises as well, I guess.

Some time ago, I found some samples in a site, and I decided to save them on my computer, just in case...

They are pdf files, and anyone interested can download them from here.

Mmm, today I feel particularly good and nice. Ahaha.

Good luck everyone! And I would appreciate some good luck-wishes to me too. Ahaha. There's still time since I will apply next year but still...

Have a lovely week end. :beer_yum: :beer_yum: :beer_yum:
... I miss Finland ...

Hi,

I passed Metropolia's entrance exam last year and I'm currently studying environmental engineering there. Here's the content of the exam :

- 7 math exercises : simplifying expressions, solving inequations (with calculation of a delta for polynomials, exp/ln), some problems with percentages, trigonometry, some logic (I remember this one : "What is the shortest distance between the curve of the function f(x)=x²+4 and the point (0,0)?").
- 2 exercises either in chemistry (calculation of masses/amount of moles/concentrations) or media (two verry short "essays" related to media, no calculations, but nothing to do with environmental engineering).
- An english essay (200-230 words) on a given subject related to medias (quite stupid for those who apply for environmental eng. and don't know a !"#¤% about media).
- A short letter of motivation in which you had to explain why you want to study at Metropolia.

Overall I think it was very easy, so you shouldn't have much troubles with it  except maybe for the english essay if they give you the same kind of idiot subject as they did last year ... But just write some random blabla to show you can write in english and that sould be enough.

Anyway good luck in the exam, I hope this helped!
And hopeflly welcome next autumn :D

thank you all for your answers!

@wildclaw: wow, you helped me a LOT, thanks... well, I guess I know a bit about media so that shouldn't be a too big problem for me and 200 words or so is not much! but it's true that I don't have to do chemistry, do I? They said in their invitation either 100% maths or 70% maths and 30% chemistry...

thank you one again :D

It's true, you don't have to do the chemistry part. It seems that this year, you can do math excercises instead.
I just checked Metropolia's website and I see they even give you the topics this year! That's pretty nice!

yeah, great :) most of this stuff I remember from high school, just have to learn some expressions in english since it's not my mothertounge, but that's just fine ^^

I'm also taking the exam for this. In the invitation letter it says...bring two compasses and a protractor. Why would I need two compasses?!

Wait a minute...I just realized...hahaha emm they meant a drafting compass...not navigational ones.

It says "pair of compasses" What do you guys make of that?

I'm thinking they're just going to put us all deep in the woods and the first bunch to get out get accepted.
Also I dont think you have to write a motivation letter this year because you're interviewed so I guess the motivation part is oral instead of written.

That's what they are called http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pair_of_compasses

But it is a little old-fashioned. These days I tend to call them "a compass" which is wrong but infinitely easier to say.

It might be an idea to bring a compass too.... in case you get lost in the airport

hehe... luckily I live in Finland already and I think I have a Tom-Tom then ready to use so I hope to find it, but sure Helsinki-airport is a bit confusing but the best is to follow the other passengers ;)

Hello.
I am currently studying for the math exam for Metropolia Environmental Sciences Program.
As they offer no study guide of sample questions, does anyone know what level and type of exam this is?
3hr 45min is all I know
Is it a multiple choice structure?
Who has taken this could best help me prepare for the April entrance exam
Thank you

Also
I am currently studying for the entrance exam for Haaga Helia International Business Program.
Does anyone know what level and type of exam this is?
Six hour exam based on the reading materials is all I know.
