Just need some help

Post by Dancing.Universe » Tue Feb 17, 2009 1:22 pm

Hello, everyone! Nope, I'm not yet another teen lost in the cyberspace, I am here with a purpose 8)
I am new, I managed to read the most important stuff on here, but still lots of things I want to know - i couldn't find.
Shall I start - I have been in Finland last year for a short period of time. And I love Finland. It has always been The Place I want to live in.
I am still in high school and i still have 3 years to go until senior year. But I am taking things very seriously, I am ready to do whatever it takes to find a place under the sun in Helsinki or Tampere. I browsed the sites of both universities, I read absolutely everything but even if there is so much info they still don't tell you all you need to know. So I found this forum.
I live in Bulgaria, meaning I am from the EU. So no visas and other !"#¤%.
Before calling in the uni and making a full idiot out of myself by asking silly questions i decided to try here :D
Is there ANY way to go in (for instance) Helsinki without passing the exams? Isn't there any way (be it master's degree and not bachelor) to get in "by diploma" ??
I have been learning finnish for half year now, but as you can tell I'm not very good at it (yet) So I don't count on passing any exams in finnish, that is impossible-ness :P I have all the certificates in English that I may need (advanced+proficiency) :)
I read lots of things here and from what i understood "its impossible for a foreigner to get into Uni in Finland"
Suppose one goes there as a student and is accepted by some miracle - aren't there any..offices for students to find a job? A part time one or at least something to earn a living? I can't formulate all my questions now and here, but if there are any EU students that have managed it all and are currently studying in Finland please contact me on beauty.of.the.opera@gmail.com I really need information about almost everything :)
Thanks in advance :)

sorry, but it is unlikely that you would find any such job. there are enough Finnish students out there (=know the language and have contacts) that are desperately looking for part time jobs. They would get chosen before you would.
Don't come to Finland to study expecting to find a job. Just don't. If you DO come to Finland and find a job then that is great. But not something to expect.

Don't expect to learn Finnish outside Finland in 3 years. (at least not good enough to follow a study in Finnish)
Just try to find a study program in English. Many uni's have them.

Yes, I know that. I am not intending to even try a degree in finnish :P
I am just saying that I will probably have no difficulties with the language whatsoever and so that might make it easier with finding a job.

You just gotta be kidding me :/
So you're trying to tell me there is no way in getting in a uni there?
Because after reading everything it turns out people here are mostly pessimistic :(

No no no, people here are realistic. Of course there is a way in university, you just pass the exams. People tend to have their own ideas about studying in Finland so people here are used to tell them how things really work.

Yes, of course but along with saying all the bad sides of it you forget to mention the good sides...so there is no way to pass the matriculation exams in my country and apply with them? :?:

Foreign students are not expected to do the Finnish "ylioppilastutkinto". Having completed your secondary education at home is usually enough to give you the "formal" eligibility to apply (naturally your grades also matter, they should be good enough).

Of course there are ways for foreigners to become accepted as a degree student. But they won't accept just anyone, you can't just walk in and register yourself as a student even if you've got maximum points in your school leaving certificates. You need to have certain skills.

Admissions to the universities are based on entrance exams as well as your earlier qualifications - that's the rule also for us natives, so especially when it comes to first (Bachelor's) degree applicants, there is little chance of "getting in" without passing the exam with good results. How difficult it is, depends. "Getting in" to study e.g. Law or Veterinary Medicine is no piece of cake at all for the natives either.

Now the thing to note is - the universities (as opposed to polytechnics i.e. UAS's, universities of applied sciences) do not offer many Bachelor's programmes in English. See this database of English-language programmes.

You can't be accepted into an (English-language) Master's programme before you have completed your Bachelor's.

I found something that interested me - a visiting student.
Because the uni in my country that I would probably like to attend too doesn't work with the uni of helsinki, here's what I found at the official site of the uni of helsinki : -
If your home university does not have an agreement regarding student exchange with the University of Helsinki but you would like to study at the University of Helsinki for an academic term/semester or year and then transfer your credits to your home university, you can apply for visiting student status.
Do you think this may work? Do i need to pass tests again?

Exchange study periods are a different thing altogether. No, there'd be no entrance exam in Finland (the University may require some language skills result though, depends), because in effect you would not be a "University of Helsinki" student, but a visiting student, as the name implies. But... again, who are we to decide whether the university accepts you as a visiting student or not? You should ask from the university directly whether this could be possible. Check what their requirements are.

And note that you would be as an "exchange" student in Finland, not a "degree student". The first thing you need to do is to get accepted into university in your home country. Usually, you need to study a few years at least, before you can apply for exchange. It's highly unlikely that any Finnish university would accept first year students as exchange/visiting students.
