Vaasa University

Post by goodhearted » Thu Apr 02, 2009 9:30 pm

Dear all,

Iam not an EU citizen and I have applied for a Master's Programme in Intercultural Studies in the University of Vaasa. I have 2 questions:

1. Do I have the chance to get a part-time job while studying to finance my studies?
2. I have a BA in English and an MA in translation. After being accepted and obtaining an MA in intercultural studies in Finland, can I get a job in my field of specialty (languages and translation).

Thank you for helping me

Read the forums. The problems for foreigners to find jobs are explained many times.

You are very unlikely to get a part-time job during your studies. The reason is: You don't have the contacts that a Finnish student has, you don't know the language (actually if you want a job in Vaasa you would preferable not just need Finnish but also Swedish), and the companies are very careful about hiring anyone even for short-term things right now. So any jobs would most likely be going to a bilingual local student. The same problem after graduation, there are too many people graduating and you will not have the language skills that are required to be working in Finland.

There is, of course, a minor chance that you might get lucky and find something. I hope this is the case, but it is very unlikely. It is certainly not something you should plan for happening and you have to make sure you can support yourself during you whole study period without any part time job, otherwise you risk having to stop your studies. Do not make that mistake please :)

Finland is not a very easy country for anyone to find a job in right now, and it is harder for people without a contact net and without Finnish/Swedish skills.

So what languages are you translating to/from?

The problem is that the reading audience is 90 % Finnish-reading.

And how much would you expect to find demand for this kind of translation in Finland?

I dont expect to translate for Finns emmediately after arriving there. May be after 2 or 3 years. Iam thinking of getting a part time job there while studying and working online as a freelancer.

Learning Finnish in 2-3 years? And you have time to work on the side and study at the Uni as well? Do you sleep any? Jobwise take in consideration you'll by all probability end up sweeping the floors like anybody else non-speaking foreigner. Vaasa has Wartsila though, and a few other companies that sell worldwide, but one company doesn't make the summer.

Who knows how things turn out... Everything looks so bleak. My husband works in a big company that employs a big cleaning company. Just last week he had made an observation: During past years cleaners were "young Russian women or big black men", now they suddenly are Finnish men, young and older, not middle aged.
