getting child support adjusted

Hi,

I used to live in Finland. I was maried with 2 children. A couple of years ago we got a divorce and I moved back to my home country, my ex stayed in FI with the children.
I have paid a certain amount of childsupport, but now, because of changing circumstances (credit crunch...) I would like to get the amount adjusted.

I have no idea how to go about it. I do know that I would like to avoid hiring a laywer.

Could someone point me in the right direction?

It completely depends on what and how the child support was decided upon.
The basis in Finland is the need of the child, not the financial situation of the paying parent. The basis increases with the age of the child.
If you agreed to pay more than the basic amount, you indeed can try to negotiate.
If you try to enforce a smaller payment (through the official channels), you have to prove a dramatic loss of income.

Where does your ex live? Like Cory suggested you should get her to agree on making a new agreement with the area's Lastenvalvoaja (In Hki you'll find their contacts from this page - postinumerot refer to the children's domicile postal code). You can also talk with social workers that will help you sort things out beforehand (in hki.)

If your ex is not willing to revise the agreement you can go straight to the court - not even sure that anyonea bove can help you much, other than advise.
