Finnish poetry

Hi,

Im going to be in Finland for a year form August studying I was wondering if any of ye know of any Finnish literary magazines or collections that would publish English poetry.
IM form Ireland and have been published here a few times in different magazines and would like to try keep this up in Finland.

Ive tried googling but haven t been able to find much information in England.

So if nay of ye know of any magazines that would fit this please post up some details,

I guess expert advice in this regard would be available from the Finnish Literature Society - http://www.finlit.fi/

Magazines... hmm there's the 'famous' Parnasso - http://www.parnasso.fi/ (although IIRC the mag does not publish so much poetry as articles on literature in general...)

...the latter has some in English, but generally speaking the word in bold right there might be an issue... us Finns tend to write our poetry in our own language(s) That's also perhaps why Googling won't help you too much as the www-pages would be in Finnish, too... I'd presume there are lots of local poetry associations so it would depend on where exactly you'll be staying.

You can just go on doing that. It doesn´t matter nowadays where you physically are.

Poetry really is the last thing one wants to read in a foreign language.

I would think that a poetry magazine or similar publications in Finland would be quite strict about only publishing things in Finnish. I know it is like that in Iceland. You have a small language and you have a public that is interested in this language and its poetry. Why on earth would you want to publish something in English? There´s poetry in English everywhere, let the small languages have their culture in peace somewhere.

You must be able to send emails or snail mail with your poetry to magazines in countries where English is a native language.

well Id presume that many Finnish people who would like to get there poetry read by as much people as possible would have their work translated or else write in English.

I have no plans of challenging the small language, Im looking to get my work published in the place Ill be living if that is not possible I can live with it.

I can send stuff else where but a big part of developing yourself as a writer is networking as in meeting the publishers at launches, doing reading and meeting other poets of all languages.

Translations - perhaps, but Finns writing poetry. of all things, in English (or any other language that's not their mother tongue) spells disaster, poetry-wise. If you ask me, that is.

If you don't understand why... well suffice it to say that you've got a lot to learn about poetry

(that's not to say you couldn't write proper poetry in English, I can't possibly comment on that... but could you really really do it in, say Spanish or French? I know I couldn't do it in English, I mean my English isn't half bad but it's not quite good enough for pottery IMO...)

The bilingual magazines you're likely to find here, though, will be in Finnish and Swedish. For obvious reasons

I am sure they would like to get their poetry translated, but "or else write in English"?

I think we have a very different conception of language. Native language (maybe mother tongue describes it better?) is something more than just a language. That is something where you understand different nyances from one syllable, can invent your own words and still be understood, have a zillion and one synonyms, and so on. It is something your mind and heart speaks. You don´t just start to write in another language, it would not be the same. And you certainly don´t start to write poetry.

One of the reasons why I think parents should always speak to their children in their native language, it doesn´t matter what the language is.
