How many are you changing? A few hundred for tourism, or a few thousand to buy something more substantial?

A prominent consumer/travel advisor in Atlanta says the best thing is to use your ATM card to withdraw directly from the Otto machine against your home checking account. He is usually extremely well informed about anything relating to travel, but I don't know if I can vouch for this bit of advice.

I withdrew a few hundred today but the receipt doesn't show the conversion rate or fees, so I don't know how it compares to Forex or a bank. I'll check my online banking in a few days and see if I can get a comparison.
As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.

The best exchange rate is obtained by taking cash from a UK hole in the wall, you may have to pay a fee of a couple of Euros, but the exchange rate will be the official € vs £ without the bank´s cut.

The saving on better exchange rate will usually outweigh the transaction charge. On £100 you´ll save £1-2.

However, in practical terms, it´s more convenient for me to withdraw £100 from the Nordea exchange desk in Vantaa departures lounge, that means I don´t have to pi$$ around looking for a cashpoint on arrival in England.

Is that standard in the EU / Europe / World or just a UK thang?

Yeah, I see I read the question backwards. An ATM isn't much use if you've got a handful of cash to change.
