Finnair - Baggage Question...

Post by sandundasa » Tue Jul 07, 2009 2:33 pm

This is the first time we are going to travel with our baby.

Just want to clear the details about baggage allowance and packing.

According to info I found we are allowed to take,

20kg + 20kg + 10kg checked baggage (Finnair/Economy)

8kg + 8kg + Baby Food

Is this info correct ?

There is another question in my mind,

Can we pack these 50kg in to two bags, lets say 25kg + 25kg or should we make three difference bags under the limits ?

Thank you in advance.

it depends where you are flying to, what ticket you have and what finnair plus card you have.
also your question didn't say how many passengers and their age. are you talking about 2x adults + 1x child under two?

your ticket will give the allowance in kg (eg 20K) or PC for piece concept.
some economy tickets have 20K, some are 30K depending on the booking class although you might need to show your ticket confirmation since most check in agents (especially outside finland) think all economy tickets are 20K.

as for pooling the allowance. it varies by airline and you might need to ask finnair. lufthansa allowed me to pool the allowance for four people even though we were split on two different reservations.

btw carry on is hardly ever weighed and if they ever do then they do it at check in, not at boarding. leave the carry on bags with someone else. check in. collect the bags. try to behave as if they weigh 8kg and not 18 ! do not let flight attendants pick them up.

Hi riku,

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes it's two adults plus one infant (under 2) in single reservation.

My ticket says 20kg per person nothing about infant allowance.

I found about 10kg allowance from Finnair website.

Where are you going????

The instructions seem pretty clear to me.

Adults:20kg, unless you are going to the US, then its 23kg.
Kids:10kg plus folding pushchair.

Checked baggage allowance on scheduled flights

Europe -> Europe, Middle-East, Asia, Africa, Central and South America -> Europe
Business Class 30 kg or 70 lbs.
Economy Class 20 kg or 44 lbs.
Finnair Plus Platinum, Gold and Silver members are allowed 40 kg or 88 lbs. of baggage regardless of travel class.
Children under two years of age without a reserved seat may bring 10 kg or 22 lbs. of baggage and one folding pushchair.
The maximum weight of a single bag must not exceed 32 kg or 70 lbs.

Europe -> USA/Canada -> Europe

Business and Economy class: two pieces of baggage with a maximum circumference of 158 cm or 62 in. (length + width + height), and maximum weight of 23 kg or 50 lbs. per piece. For any baggage exceeding these measurements (either size or weight or both), an excess baggage fee will be charged.
Children under two years of age without a reserved seat may bring one piece of baggage with a maximum circumference of 115 cm or 45 in. and maximum weight of 10 kg or 22 lbs. and a folding pushchair.
The maximum weight of a single bag must not exceed 32 kg or 70 lbs.

for your info - british airways have the best baggage policy for traveling with infants.

Checked Baggage
Adults - 23Kg anywhere in the world
Children 23Kg anywhere+pushchair+car seat

Carry on
One bag each of 23kg(inc child), plus a personal bag (laptop, purse)

So in theory for 2 adults and 1 infant, you get 138kg of luggage+pushchair+car seat.

You have to carry it though ;)

That finnair page is only a generalization and does not cover all the kinds of tickets they might sell you.

round the world ticket: always has piece concept. so helsinki-london on that ticket would be two pieces max 23kg each.

different booking classes/fares : my ticket below is berlin-helsinki on finnair with 30K in economy

FROM /TO FLIGHT CL DATE DEP FARE BASIS NVB NVA BAG ST

HELSINKI AY 0911 Y 24NOV 0940 YNNOS1FI 31DEC 30K OK
BERLIN TEGEL SEAT:06F ARRIVAL TIME: 1035 24NOV

The BA allowance is nice but they don't offer that on code share (eg london-helsinki on BA flight number but operated by Finnair). Obviously they like the marketing advantages of code share but underneath things are a bit different.

If in doubt, just call Finnair and ask. Give the booking code (six letter code or something like that) and they can tell you how much is allowed per flight.

Even if there are bigger allowances in BA flights..
EVERY person is restricted with the baggage size that they indicate and have a measure close to the check-in counter for the hand baggage..
So try fitting in a 50KG bak in that small space ( maybe only cast iron pans and a lot of carrying )..
If you are nice enough, Most Airlines are lenient enough for a few Kgs more.. especially when traveling with kids..
( but unfortunately only inside Europe, mostly )

And remember you have to bring it all back. So make sure the returning carrier doesn't have different rules. I can't remember why, but we had to pay excess returning from Florida, even though we were OK when we left Finland (and the Kgs was about the same). Same problem last time I flew to the UK (Bristol): I was fine checking in in Helsinki and my bags went straight through Frankfurt to Bristol. But when I came back to Finland, Bristol check-in made me pay excess baggage because I was flying in a "little" plane to Germany before connecting onto the main Lufthansa flight in Germany.
