I think a lot depends on whether your kids are familiar with the books. If they are, it is OK. If they are not fans of the books they may not get much out of a visit. My impression of the place was that it was OK, but nothing too exciting. Don't plan on spending a lot of time there.
There is a bus from the Silja terminal to close by the place. That was an easy way to get there, though the bus was very full and not everyone got a seat.
I don't know about accomodation.

My friend's family was visiting Astrid Lindgren's Värld in Vimmerby at Midsummer. They loved the place. The accommodation they used was Fredensborgs Herrgård, which was very good. Their kids were familiar with the characters and they understand and speak also Swedish.
- The website alv.se has a very good animation on the main page. If you and your kids can understand that, you'll be enjoying it 100%. If not - it's still a nice place to visit and see the shows, but you won't get all of the contents, because they have shows with a lot of songs and fun stuff in Swedish.

The family I mentioned above also visited Kolmården zoo on their way back and liked that, too.
