English courses taught in English, Helsinki
Hello,
Does anyone know of English courses for foreigners during the day time? It should be taught in English, not Finnish.
I have checked työväenopisto, Arbis, Helsingin aikuisopisto, FinnBrit, but can't find any that is taught in English during the daytime. My friend has just arrived in Finland, she has a child who goes to school, so she is looking for a course to attend while the child is in school.
I've heard that there are commercial language institutions. Does anyone know of any?
Thank you for your help in advance.

Well, she is in Finland temporarily and does not speak much English. She would like to learn English and be able to communicate here and go back home using it at work. Imagine being in a foreign country without being able to understand anything!

Imagine that i would move to china and ask finnish training in finnish. Training is mostly goverment supported. She can hire personal teacher if she wants.ektaide wrote:Well, she is in Finland temporarily and does not speak much English. FYI I've learned Finnish in Finnish, English in English, Japanese in Japanese, and it worked fine. I am sure anywhere in the world at this time, there are English courses taught in English.

Hello,
It appears this posting is dated a while ago, although if your friend is still looking for English classes in or around the Helsinki area, I may be able to help.
First and foremost allow me to introduce myself, my name is Alexander Kanbar and I’ve been living in Finland for the past year with my Finnish girlfriend, I’m 27 years of age and I possess a Masters Degree in the English language specializing in Communication.
The reason I’m posting a reply is because I may be able to help your friend with regard to improving her English skills. What I do specifically is discuss various topics (hobbies, culture, travel, history) with individuals just like her, while I politely correct and of course encourage them as we go along. My sessions are generally related to situations where they’ll be required to speak English, therefore a GREAT opportunity for people to practice and improve their confidence when faced with instances that may happen in their lives. Most importantly though, my sessions relate to the PERSONAL INTERESTS of my clients!
Currently I tutor individuals on an hourly or two hour basis depending on their preferences; however at this moment in time do you feel your friend could benefit from my methods? Perhaps we can arrange a meeting to discuss this proposal face-to-face?
Nonetheless, please feel free to ask for further details, my email address is kanbar82@hotmail.com.
I look forward to hearing from you

Even though it does sound funny, I think it makes sense, actually. Many of the Finnish courses are taught solely in Finnish, they try to avoid using the second language. I think the need to understand and, therefore, the rhythm of learning increases when there's not a familiar language to support and ease your way through the course.
Free your mind and the rest will follow!
