TaiK merging with Aalto University Inquiry---

Post by FirstTimeInFinland » Wed Jul 29, 2009 9:07 pm

Does any one know if Aalto University is registered with the U.S. Department of Education as a Title 4 school? And if so, what is their code?

I'm a U.S. citizen, accepted to TaiK, applying for student loans trying to obtain a student visa (TaiK is ultimately part of Aalto Univ.). TaiK is not currently registered with the U.S. Dept. of Educ., and hoping the merger with Aalto will allow me to use their code as part of my loan application process.

Help!

Hmm, the question is - why exactly should a Finnish university be registered at the U.S. Department of Education?

Or do you mean to ask, is TaiK a recognised institution?

The Finnish HEI's are 'accredited' (strictly speaking that's not a proper word since as such we have no separate accreditation agencies) by the Finnish Ministry of Education - see this page for the list of Finnish universities. That is, those are the recognised universities in Finland. (There's a separate list on that page for polytechnics/UAS's but that's a different matter)

For quality assurance & development, cooperating with the Finnish MinofEd there's the "Finnish Higher Education Evaluation Council" - http://www.kka.fi.

The reason why Aalto University is not yet featured on that list is probably that Aalto university is not yet "officially" operating... it "will begin operating in January 2010" as it currently says on their page. But as you can see, the three HEI's that will merge into Aalto are listed.

You might profit from visiting this U.S Dept. of Ed. site:

http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ou ... index.html

In case the U.S. Dept. of Ed. somehow 'codes' foreign higher education institutions for their internal 'recognition' use, then you would need to ask them directly. I don't think they do, though!

Anyway if you have any issues concerning the "accreditation" (i.e. recognition) then you might back the above information by checking out the U.S. organisation CHEA (Council for Higher Education Accreditation) on-line directory at

http://www.chea.org/intdb/quality-assurance.asp

(first choose "Click Here to Access Accrediting Organizations, Quality Assurance Agencies and Ministries of Education by Country", then agree to their terms  and then choose Europe / Finland)
