Football and Icehockey Games

Post by tyttö » Sat Aug 01, 2009 9:04 pm

Is it true that football takes place on from April to October? Apart from HJK Helsinki, is there another team? Where could I get tickets/season card? Same goes for Icehockey: Season, tix, Jokerit Helsinki, Espoo Blues, etc ... Any information is gladly accepted.

Most of the homepages are in Finnish and I'm not there yet ;-).

In case somebody wants to join me: feel free!

There are several helsinki region people who watch some football on this board, but I think most of them watch Honka. They play in Espoo, which is not a great place to visit, so you should probably stick to Helsinki. You've spotted HJK - they play at Finnair stadium and you can get tickets on matchdays from the ticket booth near the bottom. It's not a great stadium though, you always feel a long way from the pitch.

HIFK have a football team who play in kakkonen. They don't have many home games left, but their last of the season is going to be a grudge match against PK Keski Uusimaa - the HIFK coach Gert 'Rommell' Remmell was banned for four games after racially abusing one of the PKKU players earlier in the season. He claims he meant to call a white guy a 'f'kin monkey' and the somali kid misunderstood, but it didn't make much difference to the FA. In general, HIFK have a terrible team and fantastic fans. I'd recommend going to their games. They play at pallokenttä, next to Finnair and the Olympic stadium

Your next Helsinki option is Viikingit. They play in Vuosaari, a fair way from the centre, and have a strongish local identity. Of the second tier clubs, they are one of the better ones, and they have a small chance of promotion this season.

The other teams are all much of a muchness and the best way to decide is geography. Gnistan (partner club of English giants Sheffield Wednesday) play in Oulunkylä, PK-35 in Vantaa, Kiffen at Böllis, Atlantis too...... The last named have played like !"#¤% all season, despite having fantastic players, and will have a nailbiting relegation struggle. It may be worth seeing them against TPV (widow-hating mysogynist MP Jukka Gustafsson's favourite standard bearer of socialist Finland) this weekend.
