I asked our 19 year old next door neighbor to help us out with teaching our 4 year old Finnish. The idea is for her to create a Finnish language immersion setting for him while playing with him in our community sandbox. I will be at home while they are out playing, and I can see the sandbox from my kitchen window. So it's not 100% babysitting, and it's not 100% tutorial, since she doesn't have any experience or education with teaching Finnish as a foreign language. They'll basically just be playing in our yard, maybe read a few books, and then maybe venture out to the bigger playground that's about 20 meters from our house.
I told her that we'd pay her, and her first reaction was, 'no, you don't have to!' but we certainly want to pay her something for helping us out. We decided on 1-3 times a week for 30mins-1hour each time.
Is 5€/hour reasonable? Too low?
Please be honest!
Thanks

Cashier at a shop gets 6,35e/h without any qualifications (70% of the minimum wage). After two months its 9e/h.Spectra wrote:Is 5€/hour reasonable? Too low?

a haa.... ok. thanks for that input!
Re: "baysitter/language tutorial" rates?
I forgot to add that the playgroup that my child was in last year cost 60€ per month. That was one teacher, 8 three year olds, 3 times a week for 3 hours each time. So it was about 36 hours per month. Pretty darn cheap, ey? And this lady was singing and dancing and reading books, making crafts. All I'm asking is for her to play in the sandbox and read a few books
What about a monthly rate, say 50€/month?
Anyone else with comments?

Think why you want to pay her, since her initial reaction was that she did not require payment. I guess it is partly because you do not want her to feel put upon / taken for granted, and partly to keep her interested enough to continue once the novelty has worn off. So it doesn't much matter what anyone here says is a fair rate for the job. What matters is finding a rate she will be happy with. You really need to discuss it with her, since it is her reaction that matters. Be straight with her. Tell her that you definitely want to pay, and why. Say you don't really know how much to pay, and ask what would she think about X euros per ...
