Where can I find a Woodworkers Club in Jyväskylä?

Post by Ads » Tue Aug 25, 2009 8:24 pm

I'm interested in building an electric guitar. It will be my first one & I was wondering, as I don't
have my own work shop or tools, if there were any woodworking clubs in Jyväskylä.

    Nice one.

Have to keep positive up here, well, as you can see from the picture, my glass is half full, not half empty. Anyway, DMC and Matti I recognise, but who the hell is the blood donor on my right?

Hey Ads,

a wild guess but - here's a possible good contact for you in JKL...

http://www.jasesoi.fi/

...they might have hints on where to go for this particular kind of "woodworking".

Yeah thanks, I've already asked there, they're too busy to let me use their workshop but
directed me to an actual instrument making school in Ikkalinen (Ikaalisten käsi- ja
taideteollisuusoppilaitos, soitinrakennuslinja) if I was really keen.

What sucks right now is that since I haven't been employed all year I haven't the
funds to build my first guitar. So even though I have the means & the motivation.
I'm lacking the funding.

Oh well, hopefully these bands that I'm in come through & I can start making some
mulla.

Ok, good to know. I read your post and suddenly remembered having walked past that workshop quite a few times (I used to live in JKL)... and I'm not sure if the "opisto" lessons KK pointed to would be helpful in guitar building... I may be wrong but they might just give you the very basic skills... i.e. you could end up with the capabilities to build a birdhouse, or to repair a table, not necessarily the detailed know-how for building a musical instrument.

That Ikaalinen school could be a good contact.

Alas, I've got two left hands and even if I had a couple of hundred years at my disposal the resulting artefact would probably be something not quite, but almost, unlike a mandolin...

Another Aussie on here into guitar building - small world! Shame you're not in Espoo as well, sharing resources would be handy. I'm currently building a Telecaster clone on my balcony, with all hand tools. Its not that hard with hand tools and a minimal "workshop". You do have to think a bit more about it and plan a bit more in advance, but its really soothing to use hand planes and chisels instead of jointers and routers and stuff. Much quieter too (a lot quieter than the romani folk upstairs, anyway..)

I'm using alder on my Tele, since sauna-treated alder is dirt cheap at any hardware store here. I've found it surprisingly hard to get decent priced hardwoods around, even though birch is everywhere! If anyone happens to know where I can get a birch or other hardwood lumber somewhere near Helsinki then I'm all ears! Or if you can order it online from Finland or something... Maybe I should start my own thread about that.

Hey! Small world indeed, wish I was still living in Helsinki now. =D
Oh well.
The best thing I did was ask at www.lottonen.com they're quite a
prestigious outfit & they're in Helsinki. They're quite willing to point
anyone in the right direction. Just don't use the order form on the net,
I never received a reply. Email them directly.

What type of Tele are you building? Just a standard? Do you have all of
your electronics?

I've found a Wood working class in Jyväskylä, they've got routers & a band saw.
Unfortunately at the moment I can't afford anything I want (Golden Age Pups,
African Mahogany Body Blanks, Through Body Neck, Curly Maple Top Blanks & Les Paul Wiring).
The class runs for a bit over half a year & only costs 57€, which I think is a bargain.
Considering that you access to all the tools you could poke a stick at & someone who
has a lot of woodworking experience to help if you get stuck along the way.

Let's see some pictures of the work in progress. =D
