Middle Class City in South Finland?
Middle Class City in South Finland?
This is probably a naive question to ask but I am planning a trip to Finland next summer and know that the peninsula and coastal region of Helsinki are rather wealthy. From my research I also realize that wealth in Finland is fairly evenly dispersed. As a working middle-class American I was hoping to experience the same in my trip abroad. Not so much the monetary wealth but the culture of the average economic class, or below average, Finn. Could anyone recommend a suburb or a city that would best represent that economic bracket?
Much Thanks,
Nathan

So you mean a hick town with a lot of pick-up driving rednecks dressed in bedsheets chasing foreigners with burning crosses? Not so much the monetary wealth but the culture of the average economic class, or below average, Finn.

Just about every town is what you are looking for. Excluding the coastline around Helsinki.
Re: Middle Class City in South Finland?
What size of a city/town are you looking for, in terms of population? (And are you interested specifically in the suburbs of the bigger cities, of which there are not many, or would smaller cities and rural towns also do?)gtiboy wrote:As a working middle-class American I was hoping to experience the same in my trip abroad. Does population density have any significance?
What about the history of the place... should it be an industrial town of some sort (built around a pulp mill or something...)?
Do the prevailing political views matter or is it all the same to you?
Do you want “recommendations” of neighborhoods which the locals view as suspect (for some reason or the other) or where they rather wouldn’t move if they wish to climb the social ladder? ;)

...and with all those sorted out - remember the name of the town should have the letter "z" in it...Jukka Aho wrote:What size of a city/town are you looking for, in terms of population? Very true. You can hide your wealth but you can't hide your poverty.Cory wrote: many ragged looking people you see on the streets or in the small towns are perhaps some of the weatlhiest in the country.
