Hi hi,
as I an not from the UK and not from the US, I have not used a bank cheque in ages (not even sure how to spell it...). But now I have gotten the task of getting one as we are giving a colleague a money present. So I know that the banks will probably make me pay a million euros to get one and the colleague probably pays a million more euros to cash the cheque, but I wonder if you could suggest the best way to do this?
If the colleague and I have different banks, is it cheaper that I go to the colleague´s bank to buy the check? Or are there less costs involved when I buy it from my own? I just want somehow to maximise the actual sum that the person gets.
Yes, I have considered just printing a card saying "you will have money transferred to your account in a few days" and skipping the cheque part, but others do not think this is as nice.
regards,
interleukin

At least Nordea don't ask for fees when depositing cheque (if in euros) to own account. Buying a bank cheque costs some euros, the exact amount escapes my mind and I can't seem to locate the info from the banks website. Call your bank or just visit them. Remember to sign the check.

Hi!
Nordea pricelist states 3,70 e for a chegue with card and envelope.
- Actually not much more than those fancy greeting cards with envelope in the shops...
Lahjashekki is the word in Finnish.

Thank you both for the info! This cheque idea sounds better now than I feared!

Re: buying a bank cheque
ONE IMPORTANT THING:
If there is a wedding and you get a lahjashekki you make it to Mr Husband OR=TAI Mrs Wifey.. not Mr Husband AND=JA Mrs Wifey... as then they have to go hand-in-hand queue up to a bank and simultaneously countersign - and if theres been name changes then theres no valid ID... so always OR = TAI so the one who has the time can go cash the checques as people work 9-16
