General Housing info

Post by tizlit » Fri Sep 18, 2009 9:41 am

What are the "norms" for heating in kerrostalo in Finland? What is the so-called kaukolammitys? How does one control it, if at all ? There are too many tabs and buttons in the radiators, and some friends told me not to meddle with them too much, might interfere with the whole system.
IS is necessary to let out the air out of them - and if yes, how?

Thanks for any advice.

District heating, usually called kaukolämpö in Finnish. See this piece of statistics (you might want to take a look at the other links on the sidebar as well.) There was also an earlier thread on the topic.

Someone else can probably shed some light on the use/adjustment/maintenance issues.

If it's kaukolämpö then you'd have normal radiators that are heated using hot water. These only have one valve (that possibly has a thermostat)

and Yes, they sometimes need the air let out

But... I doubt that they're turned on yet (bathroom is on all year), so I wouldn't start messing around until Winter!

Yeah, the heating isn't on yet... I notice it when a pipe starts "ticking" due to heat... wakes me up the damn thing. In some houses the pipes seem to have some bizarro logic of their own... but generally the thermostats in the radiators (if they're new) are on an automatic sensor so they adjust according to the ambient temperature. If the thermostats are old and the system otherwise ancient the "no touch" rule is a good one as if it starts a leak you need to have the janitor there instantly. If the "pipes get hot" but theres no circulation (top of radiator cold) then you call the janitor to come air them out. Usually it happens mostly on top floor flats though. Oh an in the winter if its too hot the last thing to do is open the window as then the thermostat opens full and you get double as hot, usually you can turn the thermostats down.

Best thing is to gather old people as your neighbours, they will keep you warm (and deaf after a while  )

Well you need to check then the thermostats if its in circulation, my thermostats do have a total circulation block option... if the house is new then there well might be air in the system.
