Planning ahead :P

Post by Tiikeri13 » Fri Sep 25, 2009 5:00 pm

Morning all :)

Okay, well firstly i've been interested in languages as a whole for a little while now. In particular Finnish, although in order to get into university to study Finnish (There is only one uni in the country apparently that teaches it) i have been doing an access course in teaching.
If/when all goes well and i have successfully completed and passed my current course, the teaching one. I should be accepted this time into UCL to study this course: http://www.ssees.ucl.ac.uk/bafees.htm

So i'm just curious really as i don't know anyone who has studied languages intensivly, as part of the thrid year it states i would be spending it in Finland, which is awesome obviously :)

However i'm curious as to whether anyone knows where is most likely? (I'm guessing Helsinki) but more importantly, would the university over here organise all accomodation etc? and well i guess, does anyone know anyone doing the same/similar course who could give me some info? How well such students usually get on over in Finland in that year, after completing the previous two years?

Sorry it's not really a specific question, i'm just intrigued really, and like i've said i don't really know anyone i can ask about the above.

Thanks for any possible help/info :)

UCL is not the only higher education institution in the UK to teach Finnish, see others (and UCL, too) at http://www.studyinfinland.fi/studying_f ... broad.html

Thanks a lot Zam :) That's a great help, previously searching through "Ucas" for some reason it only turned up UCL, so it's a great relief knowing that i can apply for more than one university, takes some pressure of, thanks again. :)

Also, yes my post probably has grammatical errors etc, although i doubt it's enough to warrant the term illiterate : P

Anywho i read through these forums for several days before actually registering, so i had a rough idea of the sort of replies i would get, and more importantly responses in general. So i'm not suprised by your post, however i do feel it is nonetheless a breach of the terms and conditions mentioned upon registering to these forums.

Finnish language is not learned by whining expats.... so how do you expect to learn it for scientific purposes?

I do not see how either of my previous posts were either condescending nor imperialistic.

When i said interested in the Finnish language in my first post, to clarify i've wanted to some day, hopefully in the not too distant future to move to Finland.
I don't wish to learn the language purely so i can show off about learning a different language/Scientific purposes. Who knows perhaps i won't succeed in learning it fluently/anywhere near that, i find it complicated.
Although as i stated i've an interest for languages, a hobby if you like, so to me it's worth giving it a shot, if i succeed, awesome, hopefully my dream of moving to Finland will be closer to being realised. If i do not succeed, i guess i'll just have to keep trying untill i am able to be understood and exchange conversation.

Many furriners stumble at this point. Exchanging of silence is a ...art? As is understanding it. ;)

Hei,

Finnish really is an interesting language, good choice!

Perhaps UCL could have information about a move to Finland. Who knows, but perhaps there could be others who have been through such an experience, and perhaps there could be a website where they could speak of such experience. So, give UCL a shout, and ask.

Yes, nothing quite compares to a full and frank exchange of silence.
As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.

Yes..but ITs not the silent part that is the biggest challenge..
Its the part after the silence that is the most relevant..
