Oatmeal question

Post by Juulia » Thu Dec 03, 2009 10:11 pm

No moi!

Apols for the ultra-specific question, but does anyone know out there if any Finnish brand retails steel-cut oats (also called Irish oats)? It seems that in Finland whatever does not fall into the instant oat category is rolled oats, but since the type of kaura is hardly ever specified in the ingredient lists, I'm clueless as to whether steel cut oats is distributed here (or exists under a different name).
Actually, thick rolled oats or Scottish oats would do fine as well. Whatever kind of oatmeal that has a significantly lower glycemic index than quick oats
Long live porridge! Kiitos!

kaurarouhe
industrial sacks for bakeries...

kauralese
is the outer side steamed off (maybe your Scottish oats as the horses eat the better part)

Iso kaurahiutale

"Full-grain oats uncut, parboiled and squished"

<= I think thats somewhere close enough? Next you're going to want Barrys Tea and suet...

Kauralese is Oat bran

Iso KauraHiutalet is still rolled oats,

Your looking for whole grain oats cut in half which is usually found in the natural foods section next to whole wheat etc.., ruohonjuuri.fi has it and Ive seen them at S-Market Sokos downtown Helsinki

If you want a lower glycemic index, do not cook porridge, but eat the oat flakes raw (like musli) with soya milk, milk, yogurt (I have even used orange juice). If you want to add some sweetness, add fruit or berries.

Ever since I was a little kid (and that was a long time ago) I have eaten oatmeal raw, with milk and a bit of sugar. It is called kauramössö.

Thanks all for your input! Iso kaurahiutale is indeed rolled oats, more traditional than quick judging by the cooking time, and that's already clearly better. (Somewhat reminiscent of a fabulous porridge I had at Cafe Saara in Oulu, I guess that made the difference.)

As for eating them raw, I have a thing for porridge ever since I was introduced to that weird substance by a Finnish friend. Now go get rid of your bad Finnish habits... :)
It's not only about low glycemic index, but I hardly ever found any better way to get through the day without having to stop for a lunch.
(Back to last summer, I used to eat porridge topped with fresh strawberries and thick, creamy quark... nams!)

I'll check in S-Market next week for the steel-cut oats, thanks for the tip!

Me too... it's magic.

....blueberries, I take them straight out of the freezer and stir them into the hot porridge! Wonderful.

Preferences, certain health conditions (diabetes,...) and physically demanding jobs aside, one gets used to not eating lunch within a few days (without compensating with a heavier breakfast). To each their own, of course, but it's fairly easy and one is not that bothered by hunger.

As a follow-up, for whoever wonders: Found! Or almost: the brand is indeed Puuppolan, but beware, so far I found the whole kernel version only in downtown S-Market Sokos (the package is green, not blue, worth 3,78€ per kg or so). Just drop some in a blender and you get it steel-cut :D
Have no blender myself, though, but it came out OK when cooked as such, although it certainly took a little more time than steel-cut should. Better make a few days' worth and warm it up in the morning, or slow-cook it overnight. Thanks for everybody's help!

PS: Hey, just found a pic!
