Where can I find bear meat?

Post by ioncar » Thu Dec 10, 2009 4:08 pm

Hi,
I have never tasted bear meat before and I'm pretty curious about it. I live in Jyväskylä. Do you know if there's a place where they sell bear meat near Jkl?

One of the bigger supermarkets might get it "in season" or then have some frozen...

I saw cans of the stuff years ago, but the actual % meat content of "bear" was similar to the % "duck" you get in a tin of "duck" catfood (i.e. marginally more than not a lot).

Some of the Russian restaurants are reputed to sell bear dishes ... e.g. Saslik, see the section "bear dishes"

Shame on them.

This post reminded me that this summer actually I took a photo
at Citymarket when I saw it (it's frozen bits), as the prices you can read
they'll make you swallow any bear fur included in the package

In Finland I think all hunted bear meat has to be tested before it is consumed (I would have to check with SO, he would know), as is all wild boar. Usually for venison (elk and deer) only one or two animals are tested from the quota.

Bears carry trichinosis and you get a vitamin.. was it A or D from their liver.. poisoning (the arctic explorers died of that)

Vitamin A poisoning comes from eating massive doses of seals and huskies as well; the Australasian Antarctic Expedition got it from eating dog liver.

Hypervitaminosis A doesn't sound like a very pleasant way to go. :ohno:

Bears carry trichinosis
And speaking of trichinosis:

French infected after dining on bear meat
For the second time in four years, health authorities in France have identified an outbreak of the parasitical illness trichinosis from an unusual source: bear meat devoured by French travellers in northern Canada.

The grizzly that ended up as steaks, stew and even "grizzly-bear Bolognese" had been threatening an Inuit camp on the Nunavut shore when it was shot by rangers, with the carcass later divided up among locals and visitors.

Hey,

I live in Jyväskylä too.

Anyways, it's funny, because the other day I was passing by a restaurant named Figaro (down close to the train station) and looked at their menu that's posted outside. They seem to serve Bear meat there as a meal (although it's very pricey at €58).

So if you can't find it at the market or anything and still want to try it, you could always go there if you're willing to shell out the cash :D

With respect, I urge you to think twice about seeking out bear meat for consumption. Bear populations are in serious decline worldwide due to habitat destruction, illegal poaching and the selling of body parts for traditional chinese medicine and food. I understand bear hunting is legal in some European countries but the atrocities they suffer in some countries in the name of entertainment, food and medicine should encourage people everywhere to see this as an animal worth conserving and protecting for the future.

We have about 1000 bears in finland and plan is to keep it that way so some hunting licences are given and some licences kept to shoot dangerous ones, should we burn those instead of eating? Atleast i have been teached that if you kill something you also eat it and honestly atleast i cant eat whole bear so better to sell what i cant eat.
Bear population in finland is, depending on area, either stable or groving and hunting is highly regulated.
