NEED HELP AND SUGGESTION PLS>>>

Post by sandigan » Thu Dec 10, 2009 5:12 pm

Hello,
I'm currently from Indonesia here, and right now I'm in the middle of studying medical in my country.
I need some help and suggestion on specializing in Finland (I'm interested on thoraco-cardiovascular surgery).
What I need to prepare to study there ? And what university that suits for International student like me (I'm currently speak Indonesian, English, and Chinese language for now) ?
How about the life cost ? Can an international student do a part time job there ?
And for the post-graduate student like me, is it really true that the tuition fee is totally free ?
For how long ? Any requirements for that ? Do I need GMAT or SAT there ?
This is for now, and I hope I can get a further information about this..
Thank you for your help, God Bless ^^

Hi,

I suppose that by "post-graduate" you mean Master's? As for options available in English - Search the database... and contact the universities for the exact admissions requirements etc. See also http://www.universityadmissions.fi

Medical faculties:

University of Helsinki
http://www.med.helsinki.fi/

University of Kuopio
http://www.uku.fi/laake/english/

University of Oulu
http://www.medicine.oulu.fi/english/home.html

University of Tampere
http://www.uta.fi/tiedekunnat/laak/engl ... x_eng.html

University of Turku
http://www.med.utu.fi/tdk/english.html

Studying is at least currently free of charge... if you get admitted! But you'll need to cover your living expences yourself.

I don't know what to say it in medical, but it is about specialize.
Once I finished my under-graduate study I will become a GP (general practitioner), and I want to specialize in one major, which is surgery.
Is that what we call as master's program ?

Well you have to do it in a teaching hospital then, but to practice in Finland you need the language; they have "conversion studies" for foreign doctors but as your degree is from outside the EU that puts you back into the school bench for a long time.

Not all of it:

"To receive a licence to practice medicine in Finland, a doctor from outside the EU or European Economic Area (EEA) has to undergo practical training and pass a three-part examination, including questions on administration, legislation and clinical medicine, and a practical section testing ability to cope with normal clinical situations. There is also a separate language test."

So is this training also part of my study there ?
How to apply for this training ? What do I need for this training ?

if I am not mistaken, to get your non EU medical degree admitted, you have to pass 3 exams then you can get your medical license. before the 1st exam, you must be able to present the proof of language certificate (finnish) at least level 2 and 6 months clinical practice. it will be great if you start studying finnish in your homecountry, my Russian friend who has just successfuly completed the 3 exams, already studied finnish 2 years before coming to Finland but still he managed to pass the 1st exam after 5 times failure.it is very hard.no chance for specialising if you have no license as unlike in some countries, specialising is considered a job and not studying.and the better your language skill, the more chance you have to be employed in clinical practice.still it would be really hard if you don't know anyone in hospital. i am not trying to make you feel pessimistic..it is just the reality..good luck!!
