The video games here...

Post by paha_noita » Tue Dec 22, 2009 4:59 pm

Hi everyone.
So, I've been living in Joensuu for the past 4 months and have loved every second of it, and my Finnish has improved like mad. I leave back to the US in 2 weeks.

I'd like to take a video game home with me with subs in Finnish, but now I'm under the impression that no one even bothers to sub the games. Are video console games here really all just in English? The idea that even games marketed to children aren't being subbed is baffling to me. I even found a Spyro game in Anttila that says "Puhumme suomea" on the front, but when I asked the clerk about it she said no, and that the entire game was in English.

Can anyone confirm this? If I were to walk into the Gamestop at the local Iso Myy would I find zero games with Finnish subs?

And that's one reason why Finnish kids are speaking better and better English.

Why should a game be subbed for a few thousand (max) people? Waste of time, effort and money.

Well, I don't know. I'm sure in the case of Finns, having been gotten completely used to this, it's no big deal. The idea of English as the "international language" is kind of a touchy subject for me. A language begins to die when it begins to be slowly replaced with another language. Now it's just games that are left entirely in English. Why stop there? Why not stop subbing TV shows and dubbing kid's movies? Just leave it all in English, since everyone in Finland speaks English anyways. Give it a couple centuries, if even that, and Finnish will be gone. :\

So in essence you're saying all the time I've spent getting fairly good at it has been wasted?
As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.

PS2 games aren't probably going to work on your US PS2. Games here are PAL games in the US are NTSC. They have different regions just like movie DVDs.

I think the OP can cure that with a mod chip, or perhaps by using software called “swap magic”, but he may still run into trouble with his PS2 then outputting PAL signal to his TV set. (North American TV sets are generally not multi-standard the way the European TV sets are and can’t sync to a 50 Hz PAL signal. Then again, you can buy multi-standard TV sets in the NA too, from specialist stores, but they’re of course bound to be more expensive than “ordinary” TV sets. These days, this limitation is fully artificial and the manufacturers could probably make the modern flat-screen North-American TV sets PAL-compatible with something like a simple firmware upgrade, but for some reason they don’t offer this multi-standard compatibility as a standard feature in NA like they do in Europe.)

Another option for the OP would be taking a locally-bought PS2 with him and running it in the NA using a step-up transformer (for powering it up at 230 V) and a separate video standards converter (for dealing with the PAL-NTSC difference.) While convenient, and easier than installing a mod chip, this is an inelegant and clumsy solution and the picture quality will suffer from the conversion.

Yeah you are right, plus doing all that is just a huge hassle and a lot of money just for a couple video games that have Finnish in them.
