Utterly confused about where to live in Helsinki

Post by Vesper » Wed Jan 06, 2010 2:58 am

I'm applying for UAS next week for engineering program. But, I cannot make up my mind which city to choose as my first UAS choice. Either Tampere - TAMK or Metropolia - Myyrmäki Campus - Vantaa. Tampere seems like a really awesome city to live in. But, I like the program at Metropolia better than TAMK. But, the Helsinki Housing/Apt situtation makes me think twice. So, what is the Myyrmäki area like? is it rural or more city like? do the trams go there? it looks like only the train goes there. What is it like living there.. on the border on Vantaa and Helsinki? or does anyone have any suggestions where to live in Helsinki while attending Metropolia? Thanks for any tips!

I am an engineer, and let me offer a suggestion.

First, choose the particular UAS that you want to attend, and, if accepted there, then that is what city you will live in.

Then, live as physically close to the school as you can, which helps to reduce commuting time.

When you have finished school, then you can live elsewhere.

Suburb like? http://kartat.eniro.fi/m/Mtt6j -doesn't hit right on the campus - drag a bit to southwest you see a building with a glass pyramid and a round thing... thats it...http://kartat.eniro.fi/m/MtXQf

It is life Jim, but not as we know it

Why would you want to live in Helsinki for? Pay double for the zone ticket?

I live in Myyrmäki.
It is 15 minutes by train to down town.
The bus route is a bit of a round the houses tour.
Although Myyrmäki is a small town it has forest and nice rural area around it.
The EVTEK Metroplolia campus is right of the edge of a forest but across the road is a big sports complex.
Large shopping centre 200 meters away near the railway station.
Many of the students seem to find accomodation in Maliminkartano which is to the south 10-15 minutes walk away.

Here is a map with search function.
http://kartta.hel.fi/opas/main/?o=1&q=& ... =73590&m=1

Put "Leiritie 1" into search (HAE) and it shows the location of metropolia campus.

By the way the previous poster Pursuivant lives quite close but dont let that put you off he is quite halmless

Selecting the town/neighbourhood where you want to live during your study is a luxury you only can afford if you have enough money. Since there are more candidates than places for student housing, you take what you can get.

Then again Metropolia is a real scattered UAS with 21 buildings... engineering is like all over the place
http://www.metropolia.fi/tietoa_metropo ... _liikenne/
Even the international programmes are split all over... environmental engineering is in Myyrmäki, IT and media are in Leppävaara and industrial management on Bulevardi.

So I guess I now know whom to ask over to design my new seppo tank at the cottage?
