Fencing (sport not fences)

Post by Mölkky-Fan » Thu Jan 07, 2010 8:32 am

I have always wanted to have fencing lessons, and tried it once in UK with a friend who competed. I just remember enjoying it a lot and being very sweaty!

Now I am overweight, in my 40s and as flexible as a paving slab I am thinking it might be a good time to try it properly :D

I have found HELSINGIN MIEKKAILIJAT which is based in Sörnäinen. Has anyone tried it? They have a page in English, and I was wondering if anyone tried the beginner's course (in English)? Of course I will send them a message asking, but if anyone has experience it would be good to hear from you.

Here is their English web page if anyone is interested:

About the same as you. Did a work shop type thing in the UK. I was doing a martial art called JKD and we used the same foot work as it's non-telegraphic. IIRC my JKD instructor had done it and was a coach.

Can't say anything really except that it was good fun...I'd have a pop myself.

It's only a beginners course so if you don't like it...

Have you been there? I've heard about it but don't know anyone who has been.

It looks a little hardcore to me, maybe http://www.chopstickschool.com would be a better place for me to start looking :D

In the videos they are practising with big swords in T-shirts! They might poke someone's eye out!

I did not know these, thanks for the contact, I have sent them an e-mail.

And Bubba, are you insinuating I am gay? Because my wife should be informed asap if this is true!

Your username doesn't make things any easier... I find it hard to distinguish between certain finnish sounds so for me "Mölkky-Fan" is quite similar to "Mulkku-fan"

But think of the girls!

One of my friends does a lot of fencing and reckons that the breastplates make all the difference (apparently they all wear one size too big)

:D Just looked up on http://www.alternative-dictionaries.net ... ,%20mulkut that the plural Mulkut means 'penis with shaft and testicles', but doesn't a penis always have a shaft?

If the women are allowed to wear breast-plates, can I wear a mulkku-plate? Then I will look just like a ballet dancer, so definitely not gay!
