FINNISH FATHER DOESN´T PAY THE CHILD MAINTENANCE

Hello! I´m new at this forum and need some advice. I´m Brazilian, living in Rio, and have a daughter with a Finnish man. My daughter has a Finnish passport, Finnish nationality and speaks Finnish fluently. We separated two years ago. He has never helped with his daughter´s maintenance. I don´t know where he lives now, in Brazil or Finland. In Brazil when the father doesn´t help with the child maintenance the grandparents are responsible for that, it doesn´t matter where the child is living. How does it work in Finland? Is there any oficial service that could help me or should I hire a lawyer in Finland?

First of all i feel so sorry about the situation you are in - before you will hire some lawyer in Finland for your case i will suggest you to find out his address - somehow ....i think you should contact (visit ) Finish embassy in Rio

That does not apply here. I too recommend contacting the Finnish embassy. If the child's father lives in Finland, the Finnish authorities should know where. They might know it even if he lives somewhere else. Also they could explain the basics of the relevant Finnish legislation and international treaties.

I am not sure if Finland has anything to do with it. You can not reach the grandparents in Finland and tell them to pay up for the lack of responsibility of their son because Brazilian law dictates so.

If the father is in Brazil you should get local authorities to enforce your agreement; if he's not you may have to track his new location and find out if your agreement can be enforceable on his country of residence through some legal agreement between your countries.

If the father resides in Finland he can be sued in court for the child support, but if hes residing in some third country it gets into being a jurisdiction problem. The embassy should be able to help in the case.
