From which office I can get my resident permit paper?

Post by blust1984 » Mon Jan 18, 2010 12:52 pm

Hello all,

I just got a job, the HR ask me to provide my 'resident permit', it is my first time heard about this document, it seems it is different from visa, so, anybody can tell me what is 'resident permit' and from where(what office) I can get my resident permit paper? (I am a student living in Espoo, is there any office in Tapiola where I can get this kind of document)?

thanks

First time you heard of it?
Visa is for short, temporary stay. RP is for living in Finland for work, studies or family reasons. One may not need the former, but latter is definitely required (or applicable citizenship).

Visa is for visiting, Residence Permit for residing.

You are a non EU-student? Then you ought to have a residence permit (before entering Finland), as you should very well be aware of.

In case you are a EU-citizen, then you do not (could not) have residence permit, but presumably your employer wants to see your registration documents. Go to the local police station for that.

Well you are either EU student, in which case you did not need a residence permit to study, and still do not need it now that you are working.

Or you are non-EU, which means that you should already have a residence permit based on studies, and you should now go back to the place you registered when you first came here, and get the permit changed to residence permit based on having a job. The student visa is just to let you into the country, to stay here you should have already a residence permit.

To the original poster: What does it actually say on the sticker you've got attached to your passport?

If it really is a visa, then you're in trouble, but as there is no such thing as student visa here, maybe you got a residence permit after all (and you're just bit confused)...?

If you are from another Nordic country, then show your identity card to the employer and arrange your affairs at the population register. If you are from a non-Nordic EU country, then take the written job offer to your local police station and register or otherwise document the exercise of your right to stay as a migrant worker.

If you are from neither a Nordic nor an EU country, then contact me privately and we'll try to find the least painful way to regularise your situation. This will largely depend on the kind of job that you have been offered.
