Both should be fine. But usually if you live in Espoo you go to Jorvi.

Well if you live in Espoo then you have to go to your local hospital, unles there are problems then they send you to a hospital that can deal with those problems. I have Malmi A+E about 500m walk from my house, its Ok if I go there, but if my kids need A+E then we have to drive all the way to town to the Childrens hospital. I cannot say if this is normal for every country , as I can no longer remember the system in the UK.

Jorvi is good, they propose also alternative methods such as acupuncture. best to call those 2 places and then make up your mind :)
I had my baby there last July, amnd I was very happy woth the kindness of the staff :)

Hi,
I agree it would be best to visit both and also speak with other people to help you make up your mind. I went to Jorvi, and I am afraid I didn't like it, the prenatal care was good and the labour also went very well but afterwards, I found the care to be quite nonexistant and stressful. Of course I was VERY hormonal but I was a firsttime mother scared out of my wits and I needed someone to help me and to explain in extremely basic terms, what I was supposed to do with this mysterious object!! It may well have been a language problem, as I don't speak Finnish very well and quite a number of the midwives that were there at that time didn't have such good English, but I just wanted to give you my experience also to help you decide.

and best of Luck with everything ! :D

we'll have kid #3 in April at Jorvi. No complaints about the place. First 2 deliveries were positive experiences there. At jorvi you might have a better chance of getting a family room after the delivery.
Have a nice day!

I had my baby at NKL, I was well taken care of, I had a family room afterwards and I have nothing to say about my delivery because (ok apart from that mean doc that poked me when I told her not to!!!) it was perfect! The nurses are really nice, and when you have a problem you'll get all the help you need :)

Visit both, you'll see what you prefer!

Please note that this is not the case for deliveries. Having a baby is special case, and you may choose any hospital under HUS administration (Jorvi, NKL, Kätilöopisto, Haikaranpesä at Kätilöopisto (a special ward with a softer and more active approach to childbirth), Tammisaari, Hyvinkää, Lohja, Porvoo). Note that only the first four are in the capital region, the rest are located elsewhere in Uusimaa with Tammisaari due to be closed some time this year.

Oh, and as for the original question, I've signed up for Haikaranpesä this time round which is where we also had our first child, but Jorvi is much closer to us than Haikaranpesä so I'm fully prepared to head to Jorvi instead if it starts looking like the baby is coming SOON and/or it happens to be rush hour when we need to get across town. I've hear that people have had quite good experiences at Jorvi, but also at NKL (tho maybe I've read a few more negatives about NKL). Also, if you have serious problems with your pregnancy they will send you to NKL because they're the main hospital for that sort of thing. Well they'll do this at least if you live in Helsinki, I'm not 100% certain about Espoo. NKL is also located right next door to Lastenklinikka (and there is an underground tunnel connecting the two hospitals).

Hi,

I live in Espoo, and I just came today from my first neuvola appointment. They told me that I can freely choose from Jorvi, Naistenklinikka and from Katiloopisto, so basically from all the 3 hospital in Helsinki region, not exclusively from Jorvi, even if my pregnancy goes totally ok.

I kind of have to start making a decision where we would like to primarly go, because in Neuvola they told me that where you get ultrasounds done is where you are going to give birth. Well, she clarified that we can change our decission later on, but it is recommended to do it so.

I have also heard from other person that in Jorvi, you may not find too much personel speaking english, but in Naistenklinnika there is more. Is that also your experience? How about the care and rooms?

Thanks!

About thelanguage, it is about chance really :) In Jorvi, they started to develop a program to ensure more foreign languages to be spoken, some years ago. I remember form my visit last summer that when you call there you are always one person that is able to speak english on the phone (you need to call begore going when the time has come to give birth)
Now, if you hapen to give birth on a day when it is full, no matter where you go, there won't be any garantee that you'll get staff that speaks English. Do not panic, it will go fine anyway as they are reallynice in all the three places :)

Good luck!
