Being an Erasmus Student in Tampere University of Technology

Post by exorcist165 » Sat Feb 13, 2010 5:44 am

Hello everybody,
I am thinking to study one semester in TUT as an Erasmus Student. But i think the Erasmus grant is not enough for living.(500 euros) Also, i do not want to take money from my family. Therefore, i want to learn how much money i could need in Tampere per month to live :?: Maybe i can earn or i can save
I have friends came to Tampere for Erasmus but; i think talking with local people would be really different. Also, i really wonder whether there is any work for an Erasmus Student in Tampere.
Is there any people from Tampere here. Please help me!! Because application deadline is so close.

You don't really need anybody from Tampere, you need to a current student for up to date information on basic student living costs. My understanding is that Erasmus helps you to get a student housing that you need to then pay from your grant or other money. Seems to start from 250-300€ range (http://www.toas.fi/Frontpage.1121.0.html ). On my student times one could have lived with the remaining money (no allowance for spare time travel), but that was over decade ago. You should be able to find info on transportation costs online. If you have your accommodation in Hervanta on daily basis you only need your feet.

Well, there is the sex and alcohol (I guess I was always too timid for illegal drugs...)

I have already looked up the site you wrote but there is a thing that confuse me very much. I can find a place to stay for 250 euro per month. This is ok. But eating and drinking:) is expensive in Finland as i heard. Therefore i am not sure 650 euro per month will be enough for me. So i think to work part time. Is there any place that an Erasmus student can work in Tampere as waiter or anything.. In my country it is not easy to find a job for a foreigner.

Same here. + add the fact you got everyone else there students who can speak the language, know "how stuff works", they have connections - and *they* can't find a job in the economic slump. So you are in the line behind them.

Well, you won't be eating out except in student cafeteria (subsidised lunch there about 2.5 €, I think (you need some sort of certificate from TUT to get that price)) There isn't much money for drinking out either. I guess the local students are still selling beer at (Finnish) supermarket prices in their parties (illegal but it didn't use to be a police priority).

If you have 650 monthly (of which 250 goes to flat), you can certainly live with that (with bigger budget than most of the students I'd assume), even if you can't perhaps do everything you'd want to do.

I would not count on being able to get a part time job.
