playschool teacher's salary?

Post by Daffodil » Wed Mar 03, 2010 11:33 am

hello,

i'm wondering about english language playschool teacher's salaries. my partner's been working for a couple of years now, he's not qualified and thus cannot get a permanent job there, but they seem to want to hold on to him, providing him a 6-12 month contract at a time, which is then extended again. basically, my question is if there's any chance of the salary improving? at present it's pretty crappy considering it's a full-time job.is he in a position to ask for a pay rise as an unqualified teacher (it's a private playschool)? is there any way of getting a qualification in finland? his finnish is not good enough for him to study in finnish, though. i presume there are quite a few native english speakers on this forum working as kindergarten teachers, qualified or not. what kind of salaries do you get? i'd be greatful for any feedback.

Quick googling says that the ceiling is about 2500, or at least so said someone who claims to have graduated 20 years ago and in his/her own words is as high as his playschool teachers career will go. So no formal qualifications + temporary employment + lack of skills (language) = quite a lot less than 2500?
Whops, that 2500 was someone with 10 years of experience... there was another teacher who had those mentioned qualifications and salary of 2200.

thanks for you reply upphew, 2500 is indeed quite a bit more than my partner's present 1400 a month. language skills are not an issue here though, because finnish is not required for the post and hardly any of his permantly employed co-workers speak finnish either. hoping to get replies from unqualified teachers to get an idea of how much you can earn without qualifications and whether there's a chance for pay rise some time in the future?

I also work at a private English-speaking daycare. Although I'm not full-time, if I were my salary would be 1600e/month, and I do not have any qualifications as a childcare provider. From looking at mol.fi, starting salary for pre-school teachers (Finnish-speaking daycares) seems to be around 13e/hr, which is quite a bit higher than the salary you've listed...
