Technical dictionary

Post by Estesark » Wed Mar 03, 2010 9:56 pm

Hi all,

Having moved to Finland ~18 months ago, I'm currently completing my lukio education in Finnish. This isn't too difficult, as I can speak the language very well, but as I've never studied in Finland before, I am quite lost with all the technical terms of the sciences I am studying. They don't seem to feature in standard translation dictionaries.

So, does anyone know of a scientific/technical Finnish-English dictionary which would contain the sort of words I need? Ideally it should be small and cheap, although if nothing like that exists, I would consider a more expensive one.

I know there is already a thread about this, but that's from 2003, and all the links are broken.

Help appreciated! Thanks :)

Some pointers:
Kielikone Oy has published electronic versions of both: MOT WSOY Enteka and MOT Electrotechnical Standards. You can find some others on this page, such as MOT Dictionary of Economics and MOT Dictionary of Information Processing. Unfortunately, none of these are free of charge.

Those are quite a lot more specific and advanced than what I need, but thanks anyway. I'm just after a little pocket dictionary that contains the sort of words that are found in, for example, the MAOL taulukko book.

Try here and here. You may need to format and print them out into a little leaflet yourself, though... or just store copies of them on your mobile phone or something?

You might also want to try Wikipedia - both the English and the Finnish edition. Their articles on maths or physics concepts usually link to each other on the left sidebar, which is sometimes a quick, handy way of checking out the names for something in each language.

Ah, those links look excellent, thanks. I think I will do just what you said, and format them myself a bit. Wikipedia is what I've been using up until now, but only at home: my mobile phone can get on the internet but it's too slow to make it convenient for class.
