Temporary move to third country

Post by kashyaps » Fri Jun 04, 2010 9:45 pm

Hello,

I'm working in Tampere with permanent job contract for a software company. Now my employer is asking me to work at customer premises in USA with the option for me to select the duration that I want. So, I would like to know which would be beneficial option like is it good to move to USA for a duration of 6 months or a little less than that. Or upto 1 Year+. I have the option to choose the duration that I want to be there in USA.
So I would like to know the pros and cons of moving to USA for the above mentioned periods.
Also I would like to know whether I will receive also the salary in Finland while working in USA for the above mentioned periods?

Please share your experience if you have been similar situation earlier?

Regards,
ksing

I posted this question here because I have heard that finnish companies are bound by govt rules to pay for employees when they are travelling abroad but I didn't know where to look for this info on the web. :(

Well if you are working for the Finnish company itself or the US subsidiary directly. If you are working for the Finnish company you are paid salary in Finland + daily allowance, but if you are transferred to the subsidiary (which I don't think 6 months => 1 year + isn't "travel") then you're paid whatever the Americans pay. So it depends on who you work for in the end - so asking someone in the company "been there & done that" would give a clue.

Two issues: social security and taxation.

If you stay longer than one year, you will be dropped out of Kela, it will be considered as a permanent move.

If you stay longer than six months, your taxation will be defined by the taxation agreement between Finland and the USA.
