Hei! I was just wanting to know if anybody else is planning on attending classes this fall at the University of Jyväskylä! If so, maybe just write down the program you're going to be in. Also, if you want to share any warnings or helpful bits of advice that you've been learning about the country/school/process that would be nice. Thanks!
P.S. I'll be in the Humanities/Foreign Language Program, with the emphasis being in Spanish.
Jyväskylä Fall 2010
Re: Jyväskylä Fall 2010
Hello, mate...i'm a private tutor to a couple of girls who will be heading to Jyvaskyla Uni for the autumn term. As they are based out in China it is very hard for them to make any form of contact with the non-communist western world as so I am acting as a conduit of sorts.
Would you mind exchanging email addresses with the girls? One is going on to study sculpture, and the other graphic art and design.
Let me know.
Best!

Hi.
Let's just start of with saying that I'm planning on attending some classes this fall (as I've done for three years now) as I'm Finnish and a student of history at the university of Jyväskylä.
I can't really give you any advice from a foreigner's point of view but I can at least try to give you some advice:
1. Finns may seem a bit distant, shy or silent at first, but that's just in our nature, it's nothing personal so don't think that you're not welcome. Once we get to know a person, be it a Finn or a foreigner, we'll be more open.
2. We don't have a culture of small talk so we can regard silence as a part of conversation if we don't have anything to say on the matter.
3. Well, this is not advice per se, more like advertising, but Newsweek honored Finland as the best country in the world just this week.

To Jakxian, I can't promise that I'd be of any help, but I'm willing to try.

Re: Jyväskylä Fall 2010
Antti,
My warmest of regards to you, friend. I have done a little research on Finnish culture and explained the 'small talk' and apparent stoicism of FIns to them very well. In all honesty I think it is great and I personally am the same way inclined. But being raised in Yorkshire, England, it is no surprise.
This may be difficult for Chinese as their culture is almost the complete opposite in this regard. Small talk - or !"#¤% as I refer to it with my students - is actually encouraged.
Should you need to contact me at all catch me on facebook as I check that everyday. Search for me under Jak Matharu. LSE network should there exists multiples, which I highly doubt.
Best!
