Normal Check as Good as Travelers Check ??? somebody HELP!

i jus got an invitation letter from some UAS ,,,, too bad i read on some other forum that a student need to show a traveler's check to the embassy to collect the permit when it is ready and even carry this check to finland so that entry is Granted on Transit.

How true and legit is this requirement??????

The bad news is our government banned the Preparation of travelers check due to lack of a Foreign exchange that has incurred in the nation that i am in .

And if this requirement is Legit, do you think if i use a Normal check written by another willing individual under my name , and is going to be payable at a bank in Finland , be as good as a Travellers Check for the alleged "Transit Inspection"??????????

Please help out ,,,,,, am in a Dilemma.

How about asking the embassy what is it they exactly want. They want "proof of funds" of that 6000 euros, and you need to be able to have that money in Finland.

If you are assuring me that , there is such a thing as Transit inspection upon arrival in Finland for the possesion of Checks,

then like you said the point seems to prove whether i have the money or not, so i thought to go give it a try with the normal check that is written for me and is

going to be Payable at a Bank in Finland.What do you say sir???

and about the embassy , i asked them but they replied to me their job is only to forward my prmit application to the immigration office and they also said only the immigration knows the answer to it ............ and at a moment like now when permit application is at its peak , the immigration office hardly responds to a request.

I have no idea about travellers cheques (who uses those nowadays?). But a standard cheque from a foreign bank is next to useless in Finland, who in Finland will recognize if it is a Genuine bank or something you printed off on your PC at home? Some banks might honour it, but will take ages to clear and may cost a small fortune to process.

Why don't you try contacting CIMO? They have a helpline during the summer vacation. If they can't answer your question, they should at least be able to point you in the right direction.

ehh... I don't know so much about this but don't people usually just show a bank statement with the amount required? Where does the cheque come into the picture?

I thought bank Checks could be verified for Validity by calling the Bank which the account is suppose to be.

and Pursivant is it true Standard checks are Useless in finland ?

if so , tooo strange ppl still use them in the united states fo America. and the bank account resides in USA and someone wrote the check so that i could cash it in finland....are you sure sankala it is impossible to cash a normal check in finland..........?

It is not impossible to cash a cheque in Finland, but it will take ages for it to clear and you will pay huge fees to do it. Consider it a last resort. No one uses cheques here anymore.

Useless - as in firstly nonexistant and secondly foreign ones are about as good as toilet paper. Giro is...used to be a postal order back in the day, these days you get a bill that is a bit like a check, only obsolete as well. Only you filled in your bank account and signed it and took it to the bank.

They use carrier pigeons and pony express too.

All money here - well mostly - is electronic. If I want to pay my porsche wiring to Austria, I ask the blokes account number and bank code and pay it into his account off mine - electronically.

You mean someones personal check? Maybe you could try, wait for a few months as the carrier pigeon flies over the atlantic, and pay a few hundred for the fodder of the pony express horses. Foreign banks cashier checks aren't much different. Even cashing travellers checks they charge something per checque.

Cashiers checques are what are used hre in "serious transactions", a personal one is dubious.

Maybe I'll jus go ahead and try applying for the permit and it's upto the immigration to clear the check or not..if they are positive , their job is to clear the check and leave the rest to me...
