English Theatre in Finland - NOW!

Post by mvgrogan » Mon Oct 11, 2010 9:30 am

Tickets have finally gone on sale for NT Live - live broadcasts of theatre productions from UK. Last season was great and hopefully this season will be too.

The first one is on THIS THURSDAY (14th Oct) 9pm, tickets are 25 euros which I agree is steep but how often to we get to see english theatre?

Here are the details, please check your nearest kinopalatsi to confirm times - some places around the world show the broadcast the following day... Kinopalatsi did that once last season.

http://www.finnkino.fi/news/nt_live/ It's in finnish but easy to follow. Ironically the english language productions are not on the english pages on the website

Here's the NTLive website with details of the whole season's productions. http://www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/ntlive

ENJOY! I'll be at the Turku broadcast, see you there?

NB I have no connection to kinopalatsi or NT Live, I just love and miss the theatre and want to share it!

.... one good reason to become a member of www.finnbrit.fi - you can get a discount on this performance showing at Maxim in Helsinki.

That was great - shame about the unecessary subtitles, though!

next one is 9th December - Hamlet - stick it in your diary now!

Yes, it was brilliant. It's the first time I have seen a live performance at the cinema, will definitely do it again. OK, so it's not as great as being there but the sound was pretty good and, at least in Maxim, we had a whole row to ourselves, so room to slouch. There wasn't a big turn-out but I think that was partly due to the tram situation and the problems with Hki transport.

I didn't think the subtitles were unnecessary. I was with some Finns and although their English was great they seemed relieved there were subtitles. Asian English accents are not so easy to understand if you aren't used to them and the pace was quite fast with all the flashbacks etc . I was on the front row of the balcony so, when I slouched into the chair, the subtitles sort of disappeared underneath. Anyway if the subtitles mean more bums on seats then I'm OK with them. Otherwise Finnkino will probably drop the whole project.

Not sure I'll do Hamlet, depends on my timetable. It will be well over 3h, starting at 9pm on weekday... means I won't get much sleep before work the next morning.
