Real Nappies

Post by drapson » Tue Oct 26, 2010 5:54 pm

Hi

I am looking for a Real Nappy Network, which is a group that has all the information on using / retailers etc.. for washable nappies instead of using disposables.

If anyone knows any contact details anywhere in Finland that would be great.

Many Thanks

Drapson :D

Hi there! I have used cloth nappies (kestovaippa) on all my 4 kids, still have one using them full time, & 2 others who wet the bed EVERY night but who refuse to wear them (4 & 6 yr old boys trying so hard to be dry at night but just failing miserably). There have been discussions on this in the past, which contain loads of links to Finnish nappy sites:

feel free to ask me anything!

Are you considering them just for cost reasons?

Disposable nappies are better for the environment according to the UK government report (carried out by the environmentalists) http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/3 ... ument1.pdf and they are more convenient (no need to store them when dirty, wash them, fold them, dry them etc) and they keep the baby drier.

Only positive argument (apart from cost) seems to be if disposables are used incorrectly then they can cause nappy rash :?

Of course cost can be a good reason if you cannot afford them... I am just interested in why you would decide if other than cost.
With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine.

Hi

Overall using Real Nappies are cost effective & reduce landfill. In the Uk we have lot's of schemes that offer you cashback when you purchase real nappies.

i was looking for the equivalent in Finland.

Thanks

If you have a Kela card, I know they give you some free nappies, but I haven't heard of any network here or schemes. There are some good sites in the UK which you can use for info, but not sure which nappies you'll find here. I've seen some people use them here, but not many. I've seen them for sale in supermarkets, but I tried one and wasn't impressed, have gone back to my old faves.
Could maybe help with suggestions and advice,
good luck.

There were some imse vimse non-disposable nappies in the kela box I got for my now 1 year old - I didn't get on with that type, but I have heard of people who swear by them. I saw them for sale at one point in the ecoshop near kamppi. I opted for other non-disposable.

I don't believe there are any of the schemes like there are in the UK - certainly no financial incentives from the government to use them (surely their cost effectiveness and reduction in landfill should be enough?!).

It might also be worth checking out the upcoming children's fair at the Helsinki Exhibition Centre, I'm sure if there was anyone trying to promote non-disposable nappies they would be there.

I've no idea - I only came across the one in Helsinki as we are in Helsinki and ended up with free tickets to it a couple of years ago. Most towns have a fair centre - messukeskus - so you'd be best checking their website.

Search for "kestovaippa" (the Finnish word for washable nappies). You should find tons of information, although probably mostly in Finnish. I have no idea about what kind of services there are for washable nappies, but the following sites should be able to help you out (they both have forums):

http://www.kestovaippainfo.fi/ (information about washable nappies)
http://www.kestovaippayhdistys.fi (washable nappies society in Finland)
