Help with translating a passage ?

Post by Mbel » Mon Nov 15, 2010 9:48 pm

Hi !
I'm seeking for assistance from people who fluently speak Finnish...
I have been asked to translate some passages from the Bible in Finnish. I have been able to do most of it, but I'm sure that it needs "poetic licence" as a complete English language translation doesn't give the right meaning.

I have asked for information on which passage in the Bible it is, but haven't rec'd that as yet. The words are:

Vuossadat vaihtuu, vuossadat haihtuu, haudoilla polvien maatuvain;
vaihtumatonna, haihtumatonna, soi pyhä laulu riemukkain.

This would be an Advent Service passage, read at a Scandinavian service.

I would be really grateful if someone could help me with this !!

Thankyou
:) :)

Bible passage? I think thats from a hymn book - its had "poetic licence" in Finnish already, uses really archaic tense so it must be from some old version.

centuries change, centuries evaporate, on the graves of generations decomposing
unchanging, unevaporating, rings holy song the most joyous

Its "all wrong" to being a bible passage - it rhymes for singing on a wheezin organ and off-key old grannies

Vuossadat vaihtuu,
vuossadat haihtuu,
hau-doil-la
pol-vi-en
maa-tu-vain;
vaihtumatonna,
haihtumatonna,
soi py-hä lau-lu
rie-muk-kain.

darn, I started humming it even I don't have a clue of the tune... something like this

Oh wow, this is what my grandma told me, but I do agree that it seems more like a hymn.. The reason why I had such trouble translating it was the old feel to it.
But thankyou so much :)

Something tickles it might be a Siionin laulu (laestadian hymnbook)
"By the pricking of my thumbs,
Something wicked this way comes."
