I am from California and I am interested in going to a university in Finland.
I only know a few words in Finnish, so I am definitely not fluent.
Does anyone know how I go about applying and if I need to take any tests to get in or be fluent?
I am pretty confused so any help would be amazing!
Also, has anyone gone to Finland for school from another country and if so was it a good experience?
Universities in Finland?
Re: Universities in Finland?
Yes, you have to pass an admission test for the university of your choice.
Admission to Finnish universities is much more competitive than admission to most American universities.
To have a chance, you must refine your goal to be much more specific than simply "going to university in Finland." There are only a handful of English-language programs and it would take you years, in the best case, to learn enough Finnish to attend in Finnish. Only a tiny minority of native English speakers in Finland manage to achieve that level of proficiency in the language.

As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.

Re: Universities in Finland?
Basically - you can apply to a polytechnic (university of applied sciences) which have bachelor degrees - also taught in English www.admissions.fi
If you already have a bachelors degree in teh USA, you can apply for master degree courses (in English) - www.universityadmissions.fi
Some of these may have tuition fees. In any case you need a health insurance and flash cash - 6000 euros worth for the residence permit - after you get accepted that is.
I wouldn't much ponder about studying in Finnish as you'd be asking this in Finnish if you had any realistic chances.

Have to agree with what was already said in here. I've been browsing the forum for awhile now, and it seems if you're just a tourist it's okay to only get by on english in Finland. Anything else for any longer amount of time, and you would just be wasting your own time trying to fit into society.

Re: Universities in Finland?
I went to Tampereen Yliopisto. I am American. You do not have to speak any Finnish, there are many courses in English, though I highly say take some Finnish language course while there. I love Finland. To go to school there (especially being American from Sunny California), you will need patience, money (Euros exchange is bad enough, then add on Finland being expensive in itself!), and a good deal of SISU.AmyRuth wrote:I am from California and I am interested in going to a university in Finland.
