Just had a son born here in finland and am trying to get him US citizenship. The embassy here needs proof that I lived in the US for at least 5 years. Tax records wont work since I only keep them for 3 years and as I was self employed I dont have past employer references.
Anyone have any good suggestions?
Thanks

Re: child and citizenship
have you considered contacting the social security administration or the irs?
college transcripts or other school records may help also. ssa or irs should
have some way to determine where the income was earned.

The IRS should have a record of all of your filings. If not, did you use an online filing service? They often store your returns.
The social security administration will also have a record of your payments to them, which should easily prove your residency.
Other than that, you could get friends or faimly to get a signed and notarized form saying you lived there for a given amount of time. You could also get ahold of all cable and internet bills, as well as utility records (Most utility companies will keep records of all your payments to them).
As you can imagine, there is plenty of paper trails that can be followed.

Hi there,
I actually used high school transcripts and had my principal write a letter just saying I transfered from jr high and grammar school, they didnt seem to have a problem with my 3 kids, but i did find it tough at first to figure out how the hell to prove i was born and raised there
If you are in the capital area, maybe you'd want to meet up.. im at home in espoo with almost 8 month old twins ( my almost 3 year old goes to daycare ) and would love to meet up. take care!

Do they ask everyone to provide this? I've been meaning to report my daughter's birth (she's five months old now), and have gathered the documents that the embassy website lists...and proof of US residence wasn't one of them. Good luck! I'd really appreciate it if you could follow up with what you did provide and how the process went. It sounds like it might be more difficult than I'd anticipated. Thank you.
