Which potatoes - perunalaatikko?

Post by Rosamunda » Wed Dec 22, 2010 12:27 pm

I can't remember which potatoes I used last year to make my perunalaatikko for Christmas. I know it is critical to use the right ones otherwise you end up with something only good for gluing wallpaper.

In Prisma yesterday there were maybe 7 or 8 different varieties... I know I like Rosamunda, but are they OK for laatikko?

Thanks...

(PS: please don't recommend any varieties that don't actually exist in Finland... I need to shop for these today, not order them on-line from the UK/USA/Canada  )

IIRC you need to choose "jauhoinen" variety - Pito, Rosamunda, or puikula. Was the colour code red (I always forget)?

A blog post I did a while back regarding Finnish potato bags and how to decode them.

Thanks for that. I have been meaning to compile a list and post it on here... now I don't need to!

According to the colour coding you explain on your blog, Upphew is confused... but sammy seems to be spot on  .

Anyway, yesterday I prepared one batch of potatoes using Melody which is a "Yellow" potato and now I am going out to get some Rosamunda (red bag - easy to remember since Rosamunda have red skins!) and I will make a separate laatikko with those... and eventually compare the two.

Hmmm, very confusing. Well, I don't have time to try them all.

Both batches are malting at the moment. The Melody batch looks kind of gluey and solid. The Rosamundas are much more fluffy.
