educational materials for young ex pat Finns?

Post by ajl » Mon Jan 31, 2011 4:47 pm

So, the spouse has gotten a fine job offer and we will be changing countries after school ends...

Does anyone have any recommendations, suggestions or pointers for maintaining Finnish for variously
aged kids (4 to 15)? Other educational material/program suggestions?

thanks,
-Ajl

Which country are you going to? There are Finnish "schools" in lots of places. In Budapest there was a Finnish school on Saturdays so children could maintain their mother tongue skills and I know there are a couple of schools in Spain too.

As for materials... I think there are some on-line blended learning programmes (they were developed for children living in remote areas in Lapland and in the archipelago) distributed by the Ministry of Education. Last time I looked they were pretty much in the pilot stage but it might be worth googling...

Several of the links I had on this topic are now broken, so I am guessing that the project has been abandoned.

We are going back to the US, and there is a Finnish school there, but it isn't really an option for the older kids as they
have way more activities and the school's membership is mainly little kids, still very good for cultural networking).

The four year old speaks almost 100% Finnish so it would be best to keep as much as possible...
